The last two days of riding I have been seeing the battery light more then usual before start up. Now I have voltage error p0562 and the battery. I cleaned the terminals and that didn't help. I noticed one of my marker lights was burnt out not sure if that is related. The battery is about a year and a half old. Any suggestions ? It is an 08 about 24k. |

Ima go to the garage and get my elect book...BRB OK, P0562 is Batt Low, so no relation to bulb out. Looks like not charging or dead batt, but... an 08 and only 1.5 years on batt.. hmmmm not a normal situation for problems. My 08 R (Loretta) has 28k and the original battery. Check your main hot and ground cables. Wiggle your marker light in its socket, sometimes mine don't get a good connection. Check current drop when in diag mode from "RUN" - high current and "PARK" low current. Look at Batt Voltage. IN RUN, the lights are on which is ~7A. In PARK all that's on is the taillight and dash and marker lights, ~.5-1A. I just checked Loretta, I saw 12.4 in PARK and it held steady for 3+ minutes. Went to Diag Mode in RUN and I saw 11.3 for a second or 2 then up to 11.8 that held for 2+ minutes. I have an LED taillight and HID lo-beams. Hi beam took it back down to 11.3. If you see the voltage dropping faster than .1V/2-3 minutes, your battery is probably toast. Take it to a shop for a real "load test" to be sure. If you have a multimeter, check ABC phases from the stator. Yellow wires(3) and a grey connector under rider's seat. A, B or C to ground, infinite resistance, ZERO connection A-B, B-C, A-C a few milli-Ohms, should see 35-40 VAC @3000rpm when running. DO NOT connect/disconnect the plug while running! Zack |

I am hoping it is the battery I just checked and i bought it from hd in June of 2011 but it has been on the the charger for an hour and gained .1 I pulled the marker lights and switched them and see the one is just burned out. I put the multi meter on it and cranked it over but I am not good at reading them haha. All I know is it dropped a little over half when I put the load on it. I am going to test it at autozone tomorrow. I hope it's not the stator or vr this is one of the reasons I loved my 08 so much. Thanks for the quick Response zack |

Could this be my problem? Looks like my subframe rubbed through. |

That is my battery with a little gel like substance leaking out. I bought a new one and charged it up. Then I took my bike to work and now I am at school and I got the voltage error again on my way over but no battery light. The check engine light went off but I am still worried that maybe my problem is still there. |

"Gel-Like substance leaking out" of a battery is not a good sign. Nothing should leak out. |

Yep I am guessing it was whatever they put in them since the hole was deep. But now I have a new one and am thinking this battery may have grounded to the frame? So anyway lights keep coming on periodicly while driving then go away. I am going to check the stator even though I don't think that is it. Might replace the regulator. |

What is the voltage when you get Voltage Error? More than 14.5 VDC, it's likely a bad VR. If less that 12, it's likely a stator. But these are just generalizations. You or a competent Service Dept. need to do some basic troubleshooting to find out the root cause. |

So I finally have time to dig into the bike and find the battery is dead. The brand new one I charged put in and came back less then a week later is so dead the lights won't even come on. So I charge put it in start and check the stator all three legs are charging the same from what I can tell. My meter sucks but shows all the same readings from all three around 30-35. So I change the relay that seemed to not be clicking and bam charging high 13v but jumps around like crazy then it starts to drop when I turn on the heated grips and when I turn them off it won't charge over 12.5 again. So now what? Any ideas? |

If it's an 08, it shouldn't have the upgrade harness/relay that affects charging. What relay did you change? |

I don't have the harness you are right I changed one of the four next to the battery the run or ign one. |

I have looked through this site for the last few days for ideas to my still problem of what appears to be low charging. I have found two different ways to check for a draw but not sure which one is the one to use. The first says put the meter in between the +terminal and wire and measure for amps. The second says to put the meter between the - terminal and wire and measure for volts. Other possibility I pondered was maybe a bad vr or the battery I bought was bad. The battery under load from a full charge only drops to about 10.5 volts. Any help would be appreciated. I also double checked the three legs at idle all three 16-18 and at 3000rpm all three 34-36 |

electricity is like plumbing: Voltage = rate of flow Amp (Current)= pressure of flow if you ever got shocked by a lawn mower spark plug = voltage, if you ever saw a arc welder work = amps although you may be charging (volts)- given enough resistance it won't charge your battery...the amps are not (pushing) the volts(flow) into the battery at a high enough rate(voltage may measure OK with no load but when hooked up to a resistive load ( the battery/relays/wire harness) the volts go down without the amps to push them = low voltage) a) in the back by the battery is a plastic box that looks like a fuse box - it is filled with relays - several "white" ones and one black one - try a new (black)relay (take it to a car parts place and find a replacement it's an automotive headlight relay) b) check all your fuses - take them out one by one and push them back in - some times corrosion can build up on a fuse and cause it to have resistance - or worse it's almost out and it's not making contact c) Check you grounds - especially the big black wire from you battery down under the seat area - it goes to a stud down by the swing arm pivot - make sure the nut is tight...there are also several grounds up by the steering stem/frame d) your Voltage regulator may be bad - start the bike up and check the out put to the battery- note the sub frame is a heat sink for the VR - check to make sure the nuts are tight holding the VR to the frame - there is heat conducting paste between the VR and the frame - do not clean it off. due to heat or the lack of heat sinking to the frame - the VR may fail...hope this helps |
