Bought a crash damaged 1125 a couple of weeks ago,bit of engine damage, altenator cover scraped and gear shift shaft snapped off! No worries have the spares, motor fired up ok,but could feel/hear a rubbing noise around altenator area.As cover was badly battered thought it might be rubbing on rotor? On strip down inside of case was fine, not touching rotor, but the balance gear just above the crank looked a little blue??? Definitely not right, rotor off and I found a horror show!!! both the crank gear and the balance weight gear are "burnt" and badly worn, no signs of lube failure on anything else in the area. these pics compare the damaged gears on the left with a fresh set from another motor. My first thought was that one of the gears hadn't been hardened properly, but a quick brush with a file shows they are both soft now.The cam chain gear is glass hard still. Any thoughts? bike has 4k miles. |

I'd say the blue one has indigestion. It definitely ate something it didn't like. Not sure those gears need to be "glass hard"...Good to know they aren't tho... clutchless shifting has a new badmouther. I really don't want to start using the clutch on Loretta... Crap, gotta ride her to bitch about "workarounds". I'm opening Loretta up in the next week or two... I'm sure this is just the beginning... Z |

By my reckoning if something went between the gears then it would damage a couple of teeth, maybe jam the motor up. Like I said no marking on bearings. A file just slides across the camchain gear, like glass. The real hardness would need to be measured. I've seen similar damage in a car gearbox, where gears have had finish machining after hardening has been done. With no-one jumping in and sayin" this happened to mine" I can probably put it down to a bad gear.Shit happens... |

I would guess it wasn't hardened properly in the first place? |

"I would guess it wasn't hardened properly in the first place" ------------------------------------- That was the only conclusion I could come to.One of them, probably the balance gear was soft right from the get go. Just one freaky unlucky gear, thought maybe the same thing might have happened to someone else. Previous owner had a HPE exhaust,it was so loud he wouldn't have heard anything...lol I'm goin to fire a mail off to EBR and see if I get any feedback. |

I wonder if this could be the cause of extra noisy rattly engine complaints? |

Had an answer on ukbeg from Jon a mech at blackbear hd... He's had a warranty repair for the same damage, faulty case hardening on one of the gears. (Message edited by battyone on September 21, 2012) |

Fixing this exact same issue right now. I am starting to wonder if the ones on the clutch side might be just as bad. |

Interesting that the replacement balance gear has a cut out to aid lubrication ..... or is there just a spacer still on the munched one? |

not sure if it's related but something grenaded my clutch out the side of the case. haven't torn the thing apart to see if a gear caused it yet. 08 about 15k miles |

Looks like poor lub and thin case hardening |

Looks like poor lub and thin case hardening Reminds me of the early Isuzu manual transmission gears of the early 80s |

Ya i agree with lack of hardening, no signs of lube failure though. Looks like teeth were finish machined after hardening. |

I bet thats why my bike is so much noisier after I put 5000 miles on it this summer. Ill have to take a look. Gears are probably made in India. |

what years and dates affected? or is it random? |

Seems to be random so far, but my bike is a 2009 built OCT 08 with 9400 miles. I say random because i have seen 3 other 09 bikes that do not have this problem with way more miles than mine. |

Mine was an 08 build bike with 4000miles. I've got another 08 that is fine(18000) and an 09(16000). It's not an obvious lube failure as the balancer runs direct in the cases,no lube would make a real mess there. But maybe not enough to cool the gears?? I'd go with faulty hardening process. |

Just got a used crank from pinwall, came with the balance drive gear still fitted and it was burnt and ragged just like the ones above. Looks like a very common problem. The crank is for a stroker! gonna see if I can build a twin that actually feels like a twin, not a rough i4. |
