I've always changed my own tires, but I've never had painted rims before. Can anyone offer any tips about changing without messing up the paint. |

Use the white plastic rim protectors made for this purpose you can buy from online M/C stores (you need at least 2 or 3 of them), or you can usually do OK using pieces of heavy plastic to protect the rim. Find something like an anti-freeze jug (milk jugs aren't thick enough) and cut ~2" x 4" (or whatever) pieces out of it to use. Any kind of similar thick plastic (I think this is polyethylene) will work. The trick is not to wind up with one of your plastic pieces inside the tire after you get it on the rim! |

I've just used 2 liter pop bottle plastic, and never had one tear through. Even on epic struggles with rock hard dirt bike tires. |

No-mar tire changer. It takes the work out of changing tires and you would have to try to scratch a wheel. |

I have a Harbor Freight bead breaker, a pile of rim protectors and three nice tire irons. I changed a pile of tires with it. Then a new tire shop opened up 6 blocks from my shop. The owner is an avid rider. He has a Coates tire changer, and changes tires for $7.50 !!! (off the bike). My tire changing equipment is now growing cobwebs. I keep it in case an emergency comes up. |
