2009 1125R I purchased in May with 120 miles on it. No idea how the battery was cared for.

Appears to have the harness fix. I haven't done the EBR mod, it's on the list. Pleasure riding, don't typically see the high stress conditions

2800 miles now, low side on the right a month ago, cosmetic damage. Don't believe this can be related. Always on a battery tender

In the time I've had it, I've thumbed the starter times for a restart after a gas stop and had it not turn over, or just chug 1/2 turn. Release, fires up.

I've started it a few times in the past month while I've waited to get the cast off my broken thumb. It's been exhibiting starting issues where it doesn't want to crank, like it's a weak battery or too much compression

Do these bikes have a automatic compression release?

Voltages have always been fine, high 12's to low 14's.

I stop to help stranded rider on the side of the road, he's got someone coming so I get back on after a couple minutes and hit the starter. Still have helmet, ear plugs and highway noise, so hard to hear what it's doing, but I could tell it wasn't wanting to turn over.

Tried probably 6 times and that killed the battery, showing high 11's

Call AAA, their local tow company won't jump bikes, tell them to send a flat bed to haul home

Stranded bike guys help shows up with gas for him, offers a jump. I hook up his truck to my bike, fires right up. Showing low 13's for volts

Ride 20 miles home, 13.2 to 14.2 volts whole way

Shut down. Wait 2 minutes, thumb it and it won't turn more than a 1/2 rotation. Again, feels like weak battery or compression. Try again and it struggles for a second, then fires

I'm thinking it's just an old battery, but I've seen mention of a relay so I have to ask, is there a relay that releases compression?

EBR mod is on the list, but that sounds like a project to install and crashes have made my riding season very short already.

Thoughts? Battery? Relay? Harness issue?

Thanks

No compression release, so no release relay.
The relay talked about takes out 2 of the 3 phases coming out of your stator.
Reduced output, essentially from 2k to 4k rpm, to reduce heat buildup resulting in burnt/shorted/open stator windings.

Check your battery connections and the frame-ground connections.
Check for paint at the ground connect, if any, scrape it to bare metal and use a star washer between lug and frame.

More data.

Less an hour later, engine still pretty warm, tried again. It had been on the battery tender

1st try, partial turn over, nothing

2nd, it turns and starts

3rd try, partial turn

4th partial turn

5th, turns and starts

Given the unpredictable pattern, I think you may be right on the grounding issue Zac, I'll take a look.

Thanks.

Do you have the California canister installed? Rumor had it a while back that the bike could be harder to start when hot if the can was installed. I never really saw any difference when mine was put in though.

Doubtful, it's an east coast bike

plus the problem is that it doesn't want to turn over, so it's not a fuel/spark issue

used a jumper cable from the battery to an engine bolt after it had been on a tender about 20 hours

still barely turned over, and died soon

battery time, then see what happens. I'll still check the ground, but that battery can't be healthy

update - threw it on a real charger last night, voltage looked good this morning, hit the starter and would barely turn. started, barely on the 3rd time.
