Hi, My 08 1125R is dead and I think I need a Alternator... I put in a brand new battery and rode it for couple of days. While riding it shut off and would not turn back on. Used a jumper box it started ran for 5min sounded rough and died.. Anyone have this happen to them...or know what the hell is wrong? |

Yeah, we don't have alternators, we have stators. You may just have a bad voltage regulator, which is much easier and cheaper to repair the 08's don't have the stator issues later years do Sounds pretty clear it's not charging, there are several possible causes, so don't freak yet. I'd post this in the charging subforum (Message edited by sprintst on August 20, 2012) |

Completely charge the battery, start the bike, unplug stator plug from voltage regulator. Using a multimeter, set to AC, connect the two leads to 2 stator wires at a time. We'll call the three wires A, B, C. Check voltage at idle and at 3k rpms between A-B, B-C and A-C. You should see 15-20 volts at idle and around 40-45v above 3k. More important than the number is that all three legs are the same. You'll know if one is bad right away. If they all check out, then it's most likely your voltage regulator. Get an aftermarket mosfet regulator. |

Only reason to go aftermarket for an 08 is if it's cheaper. The VR that's on the 08's is fine design wise but there have been a few failures, mine being one of them. Since it was replaced it's gone 24k more trouble free miles. |

check out the classified section. I have a brand new, never installed, OEM R/R for sale. I wanted it with me last year (just in case) when I went on a road trip. I dont need it anymore as my charging system is all aftermarket now. send a pm if interested |

Dre - highly suggest you buy the factory repair manual, electrical manual and parts catalog while you still can This will allow you to diagnose problems, evaluate the difficulty of the repair, and order parts by number only. |

Sprintst, on that same note I've been interested in all three of those for my 08' since I bought it... Where's a good (legal) place to get them anymore? |

I got mine off ebay, there are legit dealers that list them. My last parts order was from Lake Side Harley, good prices and service http://www.lshd1.com/servlet/StoreFront |

How hard is it to replace the Voltage Regulator? Would I need special tools or can i do it myself in a couple of hours? |

no special tools. the seat comes off with a T-30 the R/R is held on by 2 10-12mm can't recall exact size. wiring is 2 plugs that lock together depress the release tab and pull apart. really shouldn't take more than about 20 min |
