I guess due to my large size (tall and big) and age (47), most folks guess me as a Harley guy.

When asked, I typically say "Buell 1125R Superbike"

I don't think they get it, so I will usually follow up with "crotchrocket" or "Ninja"

How do you guys say it? Most folks won't know Buell, that's a given I think, and a 1125 probably sounds small to people now.

I was thinking maybe just "Buell Superbike"

Think that is descriptive enough for folks that know just about nothing about bikes?

I always just say: "A Buell 1125R", then if they ask more about it I also add its the only American made superbike. If they still want to know more I have a nice long conversation on its HD/Buell history and finalize with the "EBR" 1190RS and what its doing right now. I find a lot of people ARE interested and I'm always willing to extol EBR anytime I can. My windscreen (below) speaks for itself.

I figured saying "Buell" and "1125R" is meaningless to almost everyone. I add superbike to hopefully give them an idea of what type of bike it is.

Since I'm getting stereotyped as a cruiser guy, I prefer to portray a picture of being someone that rides a more exciting bike, and leave no ambiguity.

I guess it would be like being told "Oh, I figured you for a mini-van", well, I'd want to be sure they know I drive a sportscar

Compensating? Sure, whatever. It's an image thing for me, a small piece of vanity. Guilty}

I usually say "Rotax Buell" to be sure they don't think of those with the Sportster engine. But no need to go there with this discussion...

I just tell people I ride a Buell. If they really care and ask more I'll say an 1125CR, a naked sportbike. And if they really really care, I'll get into details.

When asked, I tell them its a Buell 1125R. When they say "what is a Buell 1125R?", I tend to explain it to them. Some say its cool, others ask if it is as fast as their favorite liter bike and some say it is ugly and/or odd looking and some don't really care. Either way, I like to take some time and discuss it with them. I have to say though that I mainly get a lot of complements on the bike. It looks different, it sounds different and it attracts a lot of attention. I think its cooler than sh$t personally!

Jack,(BooHoo), just photoshopped an American flag, cut it down, added American superbike and printed it on photo quality paper, then siliconed it to the windscreen.

I just tell people I ride a Buell. If they look confused, I'll tell them it's made in Wisconsin.
I actually like the blank stares I get. And if people express interest, I'll get into the details...East Troy, H/D, EBR, etc.

p.s. I NEVER call mine a "ninja" or a "crotchrocket". I feel that's insulting to my beautiful 1125.

Good not to call it a ninja, people would think it was a Kaw.

I never use the word 'crotchrocket,' just never liked the term, prefer sportbike

The 1125R is a sportbike, not a superbike. And it definitely ain't a "Ninja."
Ninja is a Registered trade name belonging to Kawasaki. You might as well call every sporting four-wheeler a "Camaro," for crying out loud.
Bottom line is, if you have to explain it too much, you're probably wasting your time.
If they look at me cross-eyed when I say "Buell 1125R," I just add: "American-made sportbike, but they're no longer in production."

Interesting, given the very title of this forum

And it definitely ain't a "Ninja."

certainly isn't, but I figure its an image a layman would have - like saying I have a "cigarette boat". That is why I will sometimes say "crotch rocket", but I find that to be a very crude descriptor.

Again, I'm just looking for an easy way to convey to someone that I'm riding a fast, capable sportbike, not a cruiser.

Maybe "Buell sportbike" and see how that flys.

Just my take but; as a definition a 250 Ninja is a sportbike and if a 146 H.P. Buell 1125R/CR with a top speed approaching 170 mph is not a "superbike" I do not know what one is. And maybe thats true but very few people can or should ride this bike to its top potential on the street. And yes maybe its not a "race" ready superbike but it IS a Superbike. Geoff May proved that last year running an 1125R in AMA Superbike and did fairly well finishing well ahead of most other "superbikes" 'Nuf said.

Well this is fun. The term "superbike" could be seen as changing with the times. Not that the term was used in the fifties, but the Vincent was at the top of the heap and would have been the superbike of the day. No one riding a Vincent today would likely say they're going for a ride on their superbike. Follow that through the years to Z-1's etc. and at this point with 190-200hp BMW/Kawasaki's out there, we're not in that group. Close, and in any event I'm sticking with the CR is a sporty street-bike.

Your semantics may vary.

I suppose everyone's entitled to their own opinion, and yes, the definition of "superbike" has most definitely changed over the years. But if you want an accurate name for something, it's always best to refer to what the professionals call it.
In this case, that would be those who work in the higher echelons of the industry: The designers, manufacturers, marketing departments, journalists, etc.
Yet, with all due respect to this forum's title, the industry's generally-accepted definition of a superbike includes at least the following: 1. Fully-faired, for 100+ mph stability and low-drag aerodynamics; 2. State-of-the-art suspension and brakes, for track-ready handling, and 3. Horsepower approaching the 200 mark, to clearly separate it from mid-size (but still amazingly fast) 600cc sportbikes, or anything with a touring or cruising role.
Now, as much as I love my 1125R, and even though it has more performance potential than I am able to exploit, it clearly does not meet ANY of the above criteria.
Furthermore, the first two of these criteria were the generally-accepted superbike standard even when the 1125R was originally launched. So, the 1125 has NEVER been a superbike.
The 1190RS, on the other hand, is.
But just because the 1190 shares some of its DNA with the 1125, or because you think it's really fast, or because you can't bother to read or figure out the way the rest of the world defines something, does not make it whatever you want to call it.
The 1125R is a sportbike. The CR is a little more open to interpretation, as different entities might call it a sportbike, a naked bike or a hooligan bike. But neither one is a superbike; not even close.

Excellent explanation John, but I will stick with the AMA and what Geoff did last year. Thats good enough credibility for me in a very opinionated world and thanks for YOUR input.

Sprintst, your definition is more layman friendly. So, I can agree with your explanation. There is now reason to be upset or distraught over that. It helps to create a visual.
And, I would have to agree that the 1125s are not "Superbikes" in comparison to the liter bikes of today. But, in my seat of the pants comparison, it is one hell of a superbike to me. They are just plain out enjoyable and if ridden within their preferred atmosphere and by someone with the proper skill set, can hang with any other bike out there.

Re: the title of this forum, going out on a bit of a limb here, when Badweather was created I'm thinking it was when the only Buells at the time were the Sportster engined models. Relative to these, the 1125's would be "superbikes". So kept in our own little Buellworld, these are the superbikes. And assuming that many of the Sportster based bike owners came from the H-D fold, the Rotax speed and power would blow their minds.

If I get "deer in the headlights" I add "US made rocket bike".
Agreed tho, at over 4 years old, she impresses me more than others sometimes.

Really, usually I'm on the Uly, and I say it's my 2-wheeled pick-up.
