See The wearing along the center of the belt parallel to the directioon of travel? It's like this intermittently all the way around the belt... Probably 70percent of it has this, 30% doesn't (fyi i figured out that last amount without a calculator!)
8300 miles.
Should I be belt shopping!

That is not normal, it looks as if a rock got caught on your belt guard and rubbed against it.

Yeah that was my first thought, but I checked and there's nothing in there -- I guess it must have gotten spit out after it chewed up the belt.

the wear usually comes in the form of edge-fraying ... right?

check the tension pulley - I had a rock embedded in mine...when it left the pulley the "burr" left behind was "marking" the belt.
The pulley is hard anodized - use a stone ( like the old ones you use to sharpen a knife) to deburr the "knick" out of the surface of the pulley...take your time just want to deburr the knick not remove too much of the anodize.
....and yes the edges usually fray (IMO the clearance between the plastic guards and the moving belt are kinda "close" -nothing a careful hand and a dremel/die grinder can't fix)
good luck
