I don't consider the location chosen by both Hildstrom and myself to be one of low airflow at all. While my experience is so far limited (maybe 400 miles), a great deal of that has been in brutal San Antonio stop and go traffic. It has handled it beautifully. Informal measurements by both of us indicate a LARGE difference in temperature between "idling for a long time" versus "just stopped after riding for a while", which would indicate sufficient airflow. Additionally, when idling we have neither a nearby engine or oil cooler adding heat. My setup also has a large piece of aluminum plate which is acting quite well as a heat sink. I'm giddy happy with it so far.

Where else would you put the regulator? As Jsg4dfan said, it gets a decent amount of airflow back where we've put it while moving. Sure, you can bolt it up front near, but then you have to factor in the much higher ambient temperature in that area, especially when idling, from the oil cooler, radiators, motor, etc.

The coolest location I can come up with is the tail section. It also blends in well there and doesn't look horrible. My experience has mirrored others in that it seemingly stays plenty cool back there, though I don't see as high of ambient temperatures as San Antonio/Houston/etc.

What about putting active cooling on the R/R? A previous owner strapped an 80mm fan to the R/R on my VFR800 and that seems to do a pretty good job of keeping it cool.

I recorded CE-605 SB regulator temperature where I have it mounted under the tail near the license plate; it's fine even in stop and go traffic in over 100F ambient air temperature. Even the small amount of air flow from slow stop and go traffic is enough to keep it in check. The highest temperature I recorded in actual use, with lots of stop lights and traffic, was about 140F. It got closer to 160-180 during my 1-hour idle heat testing in the garage at 100F+.

So I received my new 605 regulator and it's huge. Since it has to be on "vent" place with air flow I wonder how good is the place under air box where is a constant airflow?

Any thoughts?
I think that it's enough space and air flow, just don't know how hot could regulator get. I know it's not good to have hot air at intake.

p.s.: I have an XB tail and it's small. AND I LIKE THE CLEAN LOOK OF IT.

Under the air box where? Directly under it by the throttle bodies? I'd think it would get pretty damn hot in there anytime you weren't moving at a decent clip.

I can't think of anywhere up front I'd really call cool (at least if you're sitting idling stuck in traffic), except for possibly *inside* the air box (but I doubt it would fit in there).

Mine doesn't seem to get too awful hot. It definitely gets hot to the touch at idle, with fans running and such, but I don't think it would heat up intake air too much.

how about under lower triple tree, or down by oil cooler?

I'm not sure about that location, how would you mount it to the swingarm, and where would you route the wires that didn't look like crap?

I think down by oil cooler there's too much ambient heat, especially at idle. Not sure about putting it up higher, but even at the lower triple I'm not sure if it would be able to stay cool enough.

a while back some Badwebers were putting computer CPU cooling systems on their regulators.

Is the stock voltage regulator that bad if it still works well, such that it is worth going through all the noted issues to locate a larger regulator in an alternate location? I respect wanting to upgrade, especially if the OEM regulator has gone bad.I am only asking because I just installed the EBR rotor, removed he HD harness fix, the system is charging well and hope that I have avoided charging system problems for a while. Do I need to change my properly functioning OEM regulator now too? thanks, Mort

Well, I have all new lightning on a bike .. i'll took some pictures one time and show you all... and Almost all my lights are flashing with original regulator (I was writing about that issue here on bad web). I have now a complete kit from twinmotorcycles (THEY ARE REALLY NICE AND FAST!) and lights were still flashing. Now I tested with 605 regulator and everything looks OK now. So I just need to find proper place for it.

I'm probably putting it now beside oil cooler like Julie (or someone I saw here), and probably think about the swing arm later when I'll have time to make some good mount.

Here is three crappy pictures that you can see my bike (I'll take some when everything will be on place. And I'll also show you some progress pictures of my work.

IS THAT A PROJECTOR ON A 1125CR?

I definitely need more details! I never did find any that seemed like they would fit.

I did mount it on an oil cooler, and it look quite nice. I now have twinmotorcycles hot wired stator, modified rotor with oil jet hole and ce605-sb regulator. The voltage stays on 14.2 almost all the time. No ups no downs. Actually quite strange. And the lights has stopped flashing. For now everything looks good.

Lights are projectors. Two high/low projectors from http://ethanrenee.diytrade.com/sdp/458800/4/pd-252 8301/2324837-0/100_waterproof_hi_low_projector_Bi- Xenon.html, custom made housing for mask and LED day time lights.

p.s.: it was really hard to make them fit in there since they are very long. Closer shoots when I'll have time to show you all the progress.

Sorry for blowing the dust off this thread, but did anything ever come of the "inside the swing arm" location for the VR?

I was thinking magnets, then I remembered that wouldn't work. A beyond sticky adhesive strip seems plausible, but I'd prefer not have my VR swoop down into my rear wheel. I'm sure as hell not drilling through the swing arm. But mounting under tail or on the oil cooler aren't my preferred options (but at this point seem to be the only).

Anything come out of mounting it out on the front of the bike by the tree?

Thanks for any words of wisdom!
