http://www.silent-hektik.com/Duc_R_Duc.htm

Is this a shunt type the same as original? .....is it any better or worse than original?
Just thought I'd post for you experts to look and see if it is any better as an alternative

The functional comparison diagram shows the Silent Hektik model on the left.

The key phrases in the comparison are "minimale belastung" (minimal load) and "extrem hohe belastung" (extremely high load). So, the Silent Hektik is minimal load and probably a positive-switching series regulator. The Japanese one on the right is like the FH012AA.

Why choose this German RR over the CE-605 SB?

Bacause the CE-605 SB is only available to the USA !

So, are the two comparable ?

"Bacause the CE-605 SB is only available to the USA !"
That's a pretty good reason. ; )

Well, if the comparison diagrams and translation are correct, the Silent Hektik is similar to the CE-605 SB. The Silent Hektik should be more efficient than the original RR and it should place a lower load on the stator than the original RR.

My technical German is not so good and the translations are tough but I think the description for the each regulator is:

#1 Switches in and out the high side of the battery with minimal load. "High Side Control"

#2 Switches in and out the low side of the battery with minimal load. "Low Side Control"

#3 Between the poles, short circuits with extreme high load.

interpretation: The CE-605 is similar to either #1 or #2 for all intents and purposes those are all SERIES R/R's

Is #1 for negative ground and #2 for positive ground?
Anybody still use positive ground?

"Is #1 for negative ground and #2 for positive ground?"

No. #1 is the Silent Hektik, #2 is the Ducati Energia, and #3 is a typical Japanese RR, from left to right in the functional comparison diagram.

The comparison does not differentiate positive ground vs negative ground, it differentiates which conductor is switched on/off by the series RR circuitry. If you were doing the series switching manually, you could place a switch in series with the negative lead or the positive lead coming out of the rectifier. Any RR can be used on a positive ground or negative ground system, it just depends on which lead (+/-) you decide to connect to the frame, which happens outside the RR.
