Hey guys, for my custom project i would like a smaller oil cooler. It should be half the width but can be twice as thick. When shopping for a new oil cooler (perhaps custom made) what specs does the stock cooler have in terms of flow, cooling abilities and any other neccessary parameters? |

Understood. There's a bit of a problem in that cutting it in half, and putting one panel behind the other might result in less effective cooling. Theoretically, anyway. |

FYI half the area and twice the core width will net you a DECREASE in cooling. |

Half the width but twice as thick will definitely decrease cooling capacity. The back end of the cooler will see higher air temps thus lower delta T's, which will reduce heat transfer, PLUS the added air resistance from the thicker core will decrease mass airflow. Unless you add a fan or find some exotic fin design, count of a material decrease in cooling. Professional Engineer here who worked for a premier heat exchanger company for many years. |

Thank you. Im just wishing the oil cooler to be as small as possible. Factors like better design in terms of flow and fin design, more exotic materials (alu etc) might help me in that quest but without know the specs of our stock system i cant order a new custom made one. What are the parameters of how you define an oil cooler? Flow? Capacity? Resistance? Just thinking out loud. And what would those numbers be? |

The prototypes the press got to play with in 2007 had an oil cooler half the size of ours. Looked nice, a lot easier to remove the muffler but EVERY one of them complained of "hotfoot". Point to ponder... Zack |

If you are looking for a different look, what about re-locating the cooler? Heat is the ENEMY of any machine. |

Anybody got any ideas on where to re-locate the oil cooler ? I've been thinking about doing it to help put more air flow over the stator - I reckon the oil cooler blocks it in its current position... |

Question: besides cooking my engine what other readings can i make out of the instruments to monitor if the new oil cooler performs as it is supposed to? |

Simplest way to monitor would be to install an oil temperature gauge and record data with the stock oil cooler that you can compare with your replacement one. This will take some time and patience but will give you the information you are looking for. |
