Engine light and low fuel light have started coming on now that's its cold this happened last winter and not once through the summer.
I feel I read somewhere that there was a simple fix does anyone no what that was.

Easy? You bet.
Cheap? If you're lucky.

I don't know for sure, but all the DTCs seem to be info only.
I don't know of an instance where an 1125's maps went to "limp mode" from a DTC.

If you can tolerate a red light on your dash, then... where's the problem?

just FYI -- if you're having what Zac calls a Mode 1 failure, the problem is caused by defective software in the instrument cluster. the fix is a new instrument cluster / software. it's totally free if your bike is still under warranty. details are in that link that Froggy provided.

I had a ECL & LFL (Low Fuel Level) upon startup and they stayed lit for about 20 miles after which they went out. But later in the evening on the ride home I ran out of gas on the freeway and was surprised because the LFL did not illuminate when it should have warned a low fuel condition. Fortunately I was able to restart and sputter my way to a nearby gas station. This (no LFL) has happened once before in the summer last year.

So, is a no-LFL indication when low on fuel a warranty-able situation and is there something I can do to document this to be a problem to present to the dealer?

Sparky,
On the surface your first experience sounds like it may be failure mode 1 although 20 miles is a long time for mode 1. Was it still on after the engine reached operating temperature? If it was then it's probably mode 2. Your trip home sounds like it might be opposite of what a normal mode 2 failure does. The "usual" mode 2 failure is the light comes on at random times after warm up even if there is enough fuel in there. However if your thermistor is drifting in the opposite direction than "usual" then it possible that it could act in the way that you experienced on your trip home.

Your best bet is to look at the diagnostic path of Mode 1 (Cluster SW version #). If that checks out ok then you can default to mode 2 checks. Zac4Mac has posted several times on this topic so you should be able to specifics on how to test for both modes.

If under warranty then Mode 1 is a cluster replacement, and Mode 2 is a new fuel pump. If not under warranty then Zac has some ideas for a trim pot to fix mode 2, but mode 1 is still either a replace or ignore it.

the diagnostic tests are covered in detail in the buell manuals.

I was riding home tonight and had a fuel fault message pop up on the freeway just as the bike was running kind of rough. After about another 30 seconds the engine cut out all together. As I was coasting to a stop on an exit ramp, the low fuel light came on. The bike restarted but then sputtered a stop. I hadn't checked the trip odo so I looked at it and saw 186 miles since last refuel. (this was the first time I'd run a full tank of gas since getting the bike back on the road - it was a total loss bike I picked up from a salvage auction and spent the last 6 months rebuilding it) So I realized what I had done - out of gas. Having the low fuel light come on 10 seconds after you run out of gas is brilliant. Kind of like those auto flush toilets that flush as your sitting down, but then don't flush when your leaving. Good idea, bad execution. Anyway my bike no semblence of warranty available, so it sounds like I'm probably just going to watch the trip odo a bit closer between fill ups.

Peter, assuming everything is working correctly it should give you plenty of warning to fill up, just like all the other Buells you have owned.

Understand. But because the bike is otherwise running well and this would appear to be the only symptom, and the fix sounds like a fuel pump replacement, I'm probably just going to live with it for a while. I've already put too much money into this bike - which will alway have a salvage title. It was a fun project and is a good ride now but I want to minimize spending more $$ if I can.

"I'm probably just going to watch the trip odo a bit closer between fill ups."

Hadn't really thought about it till now, but I can't recall a single time when the LFL light warned me of low fuel - mainly because I usually don't let it get that low. If it has ever come on, I'm sure I was already expecting it.

Not sure why, but I find myself routinely peering at the trip odo and average MPG reading to do a mental inventory of fuel onboard. Reset both at every fill up, add in touch of paranoia and you'll have a good fuel gauge on the cheap...

old habits die hard. i grew up on bikes without fuel gauges, so i always top-off when i start a ride and watch the odometer. with this bike it's easy for me to ride the tank dry if i'm out having fun.

IME the low fuel lamp works reliably if you have a good fuel pump. it gives you about 20+ miles worth of warning when it comes on. if you're getting after the fact warnings, then it sounds like you've got the Mode 2 failure, bad pump.
