So, coming into work today with the temps hovering in the 40's I noticed my CR had both the check engine and low fuel come on, then go away, then come on... Searching here it seems that it could be the IC and/or a few other things. I wonder if since I'm now outside my warranty period if will cover this problem. Anybody have any experience in this area?

There's a thread about LFL + CEL.

It would be helpful to know your instrument cluster's software revision number, and whether your bike is throwing diagnostic trouble codes.

How far out of warranty?

If I recall, I can check those without using SW, right? How?

The bike is now just about two months out of warranty.

lowfuel
sys error

SW: 6.1
CAL 1.0

Ideas?

Yes... talked to my local HD dealer. Have to talk with their warranty guy who is out until tomorrow. But, looks like the fix is 6.2 from the other thread.

Thanks,
Wayne

link, just for reference:

www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/290431/659 032.html

your description isn't exactly clear regarding whether you are experiencing what Zac calls Failure Mode 1 or Failure Mode 2.

more questions:

* what was the fuel level in your tank when the CEL came on? topped-off or non-full?

* did the LFL and CEL come on together? or did you get one light coming on by itself, then the other?

* what are your coolant temps while this is happening?

if you end up trying to get H-D to foot the bill out of warranty, you might want to make this argument: your bike shipped with SW 6.1, which is known to be defective. it has a bug that causes the LFL+CEL problem. your bike had the defect while it was in warranty. The only reason that you're presenting the problem now (right after warranty expiration) is because the weather has never been cold enough in Austin to expose the defect during the warranty period. Now that the weather has gotten colder, the bike is revealing the presence of the software defect that was there all along.

I'm thinking that argument offers you the best chance of getting warranty coverage.

Let us know how it goes.

From the descriptions, zak posted, it looks like I'm seeing at he is calling Failure Mode 1.

Your questions answered:

1) Tank is full, in fact I only had 9 miles on the bike since my last fill up.

2) The lights came on together and went out together. However, they did this three times on my ride in today.

3) I didn't look at the coolant temps, so I'll have to watch that tomorrow. It's warm enough now that I don't think I'll see the problem.

Your line of reasoning was pretty much what I was going to use when I talked to their warranty guy. I'll report back what I find out from the claims guy tomorrow.

Wayne

You are seeing the results of both failure modes.
First key on - CEL/LFL - Rev6.1 firmware - you need 6.2.

As you reach OpTemp, you switch failure modes and go live to a thermistor that has gone out of range.
The numbers it sends to the IC are wrong to the IC so it sets a new DTC - failure mode 2 - you need a new fuel pump/sensor ass'y.
I have a fix that is minimally-invasive, but theory only so far, no actual tries.
