The warranty on my '08 1125R expires on Thursday, so I brought the bike to the closest dealer, Dales Harley Davidson in Mt. Vernon, IL, to have the cluster (hopefully) replaced. (The bike will infrequently drain its battery overnight or have the low fuel light stay on longer than it should.) I'd already called Harley customer care and gotten a reference number for the job, although the HD rep said I'd need to have the bike checked out by a dealer before they could authorize replacement. About a year and a half ago, I called HD customer care about the gas fumes when the bike is shut off after being hot. I'd requested a Cali charcoal canister, but HD said they wouldn't authorize that until I had the frame insulated first. They gave me a reference number to have it done, but when I called Dales, the service person said they weren't comfortable doing it since it involved dropping the motor. The next closest dealer, Gateway HD in St. Louis, said they'd do it, but they are almost two hours away and I didn't feel like I wanted it done badly enough to spend 8 hours on the road (two round trips). While at Dales today, I asked the service guy if they'd be interested in doing the frame insulation, and he said "sure". So, that's getting taken care of as well. I also noticed that they had signs that said "50% off labor for December". My 1125 is still a good 5000+ miles away from the scheduled valve check. But since I've read that some people say that the valves are tight, even if checked before the service interval, and since there's been a few people with some metal degradation in their cams, I asked how much a valve adjustment would cost. The service guy said it booked at four hours, and half off would be $148. That seemed like a pretty good deal to me (considering it would probably take me a lot longer than 4 hours to do it myself), so I asked them to do that as well. I asked that the valves be adjusted on the loose side of spec, and that they check the cams for any irregular wear. (This way if there are any cam wear issues, I can get them covered under warranty too.) So, I figured I'd mention that to you guys--if there's anyone not too far from the southern Illinois area who is thinking about doing some maintenance or repair work to their Buell, it might be a good idea to check out Dales for their half-off labor special. |

Sounds like a good combination of work to get done at decent rates. I too will have to pay to have the valves done and that cost is scaring me! |

Cost me about $120 or so in parts. Amsoil 20w50, oil filter, spark plugs and 7 shims. Labor wasn't too hard, did it during the winter when I had more than enough time to do it. 3 days of actual downtime as I recall, but each day was only about 3-4 hours of "work" on the bike. I need a lift next time though. I don't care to work on the floor since I'm getting up there in age. |

The service guy called yesterday, said that the valves were in spec (in the mid-range of spec) and offered to change the plugs for no additional labor, so I told him to go ahead with that. The frame insulation was in progress when he called, and Harley had a new cluster on the way. Sweet! |
