Well I got my bike back today from the dealer with a fresh stator... parts as delivered to them by HD. And yes these are precisely the same spec parts that have now failed and stranded me twice. I guess I'll just have to keep the ol' cell phone battery charged and hope it doesn't crap out when I'm off in the boonies somewhere.

While the bike was sitting, I had a GSXR750 test bike on loan and DAYUM that thing is sweet... SO I started thinking I was gonna sell the Buell and be done with all this craziness. Both times I got stranded it was at night, after working essentially a double-length day more than 20 miles from home. So getting a fresh new Suzuki would be quite sensible. So I was musing... I'd get 5k for the bike and then put that down on a Gixxer and the payments don't look heinous at all... very sensible.

Then I got on MY bike today. The one I fiddled with and fettled and put my aftermarket stuff on. It fits me. It's raucous with the FMF pipe (I've been called "loud" too). It has a short wheelbase (I'm certainly not tall). It is fast and quick and kind of bulldog-ish (yep... I ran short distance races in track...) It has been called "f'ugly" by some and "interesting" or "unique" by others and a few say, "it's cool." Most of the former ones fit here (great face for radio I've been told, ha ha). I could go on because there IS more but you get the idea.

So after not riding my CR in almost a month., it took all of about 2 minutes to fall back in love with MY motorcycle.

So there's a rumor this model has a chronic electrical problem? Damn near forgot all about those today. It's supposed to rain like hell tomorrow. I wanna ride anyway because my BIKE IS BACK!!!!!!

Yep, it makes no sense at all...

Its EBR coffee now a days, and that is next on the list for my bike when the stator goes again - the EBR stator kit next time when the fix is needed.

good deal natty.
After getting my bike back damaged every time i took it to a dealer and losing about 14 days of ridding in "Gods country"
Western NC.

I Decide it was time for it to go.

I liked being the only buell and didn't mind explaining WTf Buell is and where it came from.

But more than anything I like to Ride.
The new 2010 Zx10r does that well.
I still have a 2005 xb9r.(which is so reliable)

Doing the same thing over and over again expecting a different result doesn't help. Try something different. When my stator went at 2,200 miles they said the bike was low on oil.
(1) I took that as a hint to add more oil. (2) I disconnected the harness several thousand miles ago. My CR ignition runs right with full electrical output. I now have over 13,000 miles on my replacement stator. (3) 3.4 quarts of oil with filter hasn't caused me any problems.

>> 3.4 quarts

Interesting. Don't mean to hijack, but I have a couple of questions for you.

1. Where does that put you on the dipstick? I'm wondering if there's any way to check your oil level to keep it at that level, without having to dump and refill.

2. Have you looked down the intakes to be sure that you're not burping through the breather? On my 09 R I've been keeping my hot level at the "overfill" line on the 09 dipstick, which corresponds to 3 quarts minus 200cc. No breather overflow yet.

Its not a hijack, but it does beg the question: if the issue is heat (in part) and there's not enough cool oil reaching the stator (due to flawed design in terms of oil jets, porting, finning, etc whatever), then how would a little more oil in the sump make any difference? That oil would still be at nearly identical temp as with spec amount... Each molecule would just "wait" a little longer for its turn to meet the pump... Or so it seems to
me.

I run my oil level at the "overfill" line, but I confess that I don't understand the benefit of running an exceptionally high / overfilled level either. I'm new to the bike and I just want to be sure that I don't run low between checks.

We know that the rotor/stator design is a hotbox that doesn't seem to get ANY significant amount of oil cooling. There are no jets, and the rotor mounts over the stator with such tight tolerances that it appears to effectively keep all oil splash out of the stator.

Based on the photos I've seen here, it looks like the factory configuration leaves the rotor/stator totally high and dry. If that's the case, then you could add all kinds of oil to the sump ... and what difference could it make? Well, it would add a margin of safety to make sure that your level doesn't get too low, but I'm not sure that it adds any other benefit. I don't think there's enough thermal mass in an extra 500cc of oil to make a difference, and I don't think that the sump oil level is raised high enough to immerse the stator. But too high an oil level could potentially cause venting through the breather into the intake. That would be bad.

In my case, I don't fill to the overfill line (hot) with the expectation that a little more sump volume is going to magically immerse the hotboxed stator in oil, or that the marginal increase in volume will change overall system temps. My purpose for keeping the oil level high is to stay in a safe zone, where the oil is high enough that it won't run low before my next oil check, and low enough that it won't cause burping through the breather into the intake. (Just as you'd expect, when my hot oil checks are at "overfill" my cold oil checks barely touch the tip of the dipstick.)

My bike is still pretty new. I don't want to perform hot oil checks at the end of each ride (PITA), but I don't want my oil running low on me either. To be on the safe side, I just try to keep it topped off while I learn how much oil my bike burns. The good news is that this month I've gone 3,000 miles without burning any oil. The level is staying right at the "overfill" line.

Oops -- i forgot that there was an oil change in there, so I should have said 3000 miles this month and 2500 miles since the last oil change.

IDK, the oil amount was was mentioned elsewhere here and with what I heard at the dealer, I followed.

Thanks. Since you're running at what sounds like a higher oil level than most, it would be really interesting to know if you notice any signs of oil passing through the breather to the intakes. Next time you have your airbox cover off, could you let us know? If you don't have any burp into the intakes, that would tell us that it's safe to raise the oil volume up to 3.4qt without worrying about an overfill condition.

I ask this because I seem to remember reading on this forum about breather burp into the intakes with an overfill condition, but I can't seem to find the information about how much oil causes the problem.

Anyone?

I have checked TBs 2x and no signs of oil anywhere. The engine has not been past 8,000 rpms.

Would you be willing to run it up to the rev limiter a couple times (when it's fully warmed up of course) and then go check to see if everything is still dry in the airbox? Running to redline once in a while won't hurt your bike - at least that's what they told me.

Danny. Did you ever ride the bike HARD yet and then check if your air box was all slimy with blowback? I just did old/filter and have correct stock amount in the bike...
