My warranty expires in 10 days, and I'm unbelievably busy and over scheduled.
I noticed the very first and faint sign of clutch weep: just a bit of brake fluid discernible below the weep hole.

So, do I call and try to get the dealer (really good BTW) to agree and work out some arrangement even if I can't get the bike there physically by the end of the month? Is that even possible.

Or do I say to heck with it and buy the Erik Buell Racing replacement and assume it will laster longer in any case. I know the Erik Buell Racing part is only $95, but what is the cost of putting it in?

I would think that the call or workorder date is all that matters.

Call and ask your service writer.

i just placed a work order for my weeping clutch with only 9 days left on the factory warranty. they normally go by the call date. the harley shop here has a 90 day warranty on all work performed, so even after it goes out of warranty, they will have to fix it in the next 90 days should there be any problems. just call and ask, what could it hurt?

Call them. Harley fixed my clutch weep out of warranty with no questions asked. They were very accommodating.

I have 20 days till mine expires and I am still debating if I want to buy the extended warrantee. 1200 bones for 2 years and 1300 for 3! I have had the rear brake go twice and 2 gauge clusters thoughts?

Oh and it’s a 08.

$1300 buys you a lot of gauge clusters and brake calipers. $1300 also buys you a lot of gas and tires.

$1300 buys peace of mind, I doubt you will burn $1300 in gas during the warranty period.
When you get the repair bill for something that could possibly be covered under EW, you would wish you would have spent the $$$.

Not really, because you are still out $1300 and no bike while it is getting repaired. Warranty does not mean it will or will not break. Then you still have to pay deductibles, and depending on how good your dealer is you may wait for parts, then also depending on your dealer you may end up have them half assing it.

My 1125R is still under warranty for a few more days, and to date I have spent $1533.89 on gas, that is 421.27 gallons over the course of 17,782 miles. That is just my 08R alone.

When you get the repair bill, you will wonder why you brought it to a Harley dealer. Clutch weep can be fixed by yourself in an hour with a hundred dollar part.

The OEM part is $200, and will set you back an hour in labor, so around $300 total. Even if you paid for extended warranty, you will still pay a $50 to have the work done, and that still leaves you around a grand in the hole.

Short of a motor failure, there ain't much you can happen to cause $1300 in repairs, especially if you fix with aftermarket and at independent shops.

Froggy you beat me to it @ 23k I've spent way more than 1300 on gas. Since warranty expired back in april I've not had any warrantable failures including weep which was finally fixed on the 4th repair...

stator failure will put you right up close to the $1300 mark, and if you have one fail per year, which i have, it will pay for it self after two. you guys also forget that not everyone is mechanically inclined or experienced.

say you were to do the clutch weep fix yourself, $300 in parts, gather up the tools you're going to need......but isn't there a clutch special tool for removing the spherical nut? i don't have one laying around, sure it probably is cheap but that's one more cost added to the total bill. then you're going to need a service manual, another cost to the bill. surely your going to want to torque everything to spec right!? oh now you have to rent or buy a good torque wrench....im sure most people don't just have torque wrench's in their basic tool kits, another added cost. if you really wanted to you could put an hourly price on your time and figure that in. i know even with these things added it still doesn't come close to the $1300 for the extended warranty BUT what happens when the stator goes out? you're back buying big ass sockets to get the stator nut off torque wrenches that are capable of even higher torques, more special, tools etc.

guess what im saying is DEPENDING on who you are the warranty is a good idea.

also on a side note, anyone know how much a set of factory forks are? mine are getting replaced under the extended warranty the fluid that came out of them looks like someone tried to replace it with silver antisieze.

> but isn't there a clutch special tool for removing the spherical nut?

No, but you will probably want an outside drive socket set to make the job easier.

These have a lot of uses around the shop, so it's something nice to have around, anyway.

> then you're going to need a service manual,
> surely your going to want to torque everything to spec right!?

How do you even *ride* without these tools? Do you not check critical fasteners before a ride? Are you ** NUTS **?

> anyone know how much a set of factory forks are?

So, you had an ordinary fork seal leak, had an incompetent tech screw them up, and you are extolling the value of a warranty?

Fork seals and fluid should be replaced every season or so, anyway. They are an ordinary service item, and are even mentioned in your owner's manual as part of the regular service schedule. The silver anti-seize look you saw in the fork oil was standard bushing and cartridge damper wear that slowly contaminates the fork oil. It looked that way because you let it go entirely too long without service.

I would argue that is *NOT* a warranty issue.

He has an 08, so a stator failure is unlikely. You would also be a moron to pay $1300 out of warranty to have the stator replaced with another 09 unit. If you were one of the unlucky ones that got tricked into buying the extended warranty, you are stuck dealing with the stator for who knows how many more years, and you still are not going to have the issue solved because they will keep putting more 09 stators in.

jdugger- your saying that before every time you ride.....not race, you go through and check the torque on all critical fasteners?

"No, but you will probably want an outside drive socket set to make the job easier."

what is an "outside drive socket"? you mean a regular socket? or are you talking about sockets that can be used with a wrench?

"So, you had an ordinary fork seal leak, had an incompetent tech screw them up, and you are extolling the value of a warranty?"

no! i had a clunk so bad that when hitting even the smallest bump i could feel it into my neck. the fork seals never had a slightest mist. apparently the spring joint cracked and broke apart in the left fork, you shouldn't make assumptions. you never did answer how much the forks were by the way.

froggy you are %100 right, but on the same token there are still no proven aftermarket methods resolving the matter, if you are luck enough to get your 09 setup replaced with an 08...................then you're good to go.

Why need aftermarket if an '08 resolves the problem?

Anyone can purchase parts from a dealership.

get a work order started by phone and arrange to bring it in when convenient. Even if you get it in after warranty the work order predates the expiration of warranty and you will be good. Call the dealer and ask.

Doing an o-ring change for clutch weep is simple. You don;t need any specialized socket. All you need is a 17mm off set box wrench and an allen key. I just did my first one using the eebbrr clutch actuator.

With the larger opening in the ("B" Version) Clutch cover, you don't have to remove the clutch cover to get at the clutch actuator o-rings which makes the process real easy.

Your choice on getting the warranty extended will depend on your personality. No one can make that choice for you but some here have given some goos things to consider in making that choice for yourself. That is why this board is such a valuable resource!

Cheers,

Yes. On a street ride, I'd do it the morning of the ride and not worry about it for the Sat/Sun weekend period, but yes, I always check before I ride.

> what is an "outside drive socket"? you mean a regular socket?

Something like this: http://www.lowes.com/pd_68107-1074-22399_?productI d=1097399

The tool is hollow so you can use them on the outside of the spherical nut and still put in a 5mm drive through the center.

> you never did answer how much the forks were by the way.

I have no idea. But, Erik Buell Racing is selling a BPF kit for $1200 ish. That's a major upgrade from the stock kit, so it would be the way to go. If you got new stock kit, you would be out close to $1k (or at least 600 for the Erik Buell Racing stuff) for good fork dampers, anyway, might as well use the opportunity to get the good stuff.
