The only avenue open to pressure HD to come up with a permanent fix or extend warranties for failing charging systems (barring a class action suit) is to file a complaint with the NHTSA. If you've had a charging system failure, please, right now, file a complaint at:

https://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/VehicleComplaint/ind ex.xhtml

You'll need your VIN, the mileage and the date of the failure. All it takes is five minutes. Doing so will go a long way towards getting the actual number of failures on record.

Some have argued that an engine ceasing to operate while riding is not a safety issue. Further debate on this subject is unproductive. File a complaint and lets have the NHTSA rule if it's a safety issue.

Thanks.

I agree with this, however the NHTSA does not get involved with reliability issues unless there is a safety concern. Loss of power causing a vehicle to stall or failure of headlights/signals/horn can be considered safety issues.

Wow.

Bikes stop running when you let them run out of gas, too. File THAT with the NHTSA, let me know how it works out for you.

The bike running out of gas is my fault. The bike dying because the stator failed is not my fault.

Pwillikers, great idea.

Man Dktechguy,

That was pretty harsh. You ought to figure out who Ratbuell is.......and then apologize. Oh, good luck with the NHTSA thing. Maybe it will work this time. Third time is supposed to be the charm.

"But they will still have turn signals and headlight."
On the first of 3 failures i made it 45 miles to home with out a problem other then worry, the other two times i also made it to my destination.
A pain in the keister, yes, Is it going to cause a sudden loss of engine function, no, (unless your an total idiot and haven't flipped you cluster to monitor the voltage, but even then, really?)
Good luck with your suit and please keep us informed.
And by the way i now am running an 08 spec charging system thank to HD no charge.

The NHTSA has ruled similar issues to be safety issues, and demanded recalls.

If I had an 1125 that had the failure, I would report it.

I wouldn't sue, or wait for Harley to fix it either though....

Why anyone would be reluctant to report a failure of this type to the NHTSA is beyond me. And, why others would make demeaning, sarcastic remarks aimed at those who are rallying to use the only means available to pressure HD to act on behalf of this entire community is way beyond me.

It's for the good of all of us if we get these failures on the record. Just file a report and let the NHTSA decide if it's a safety issue.

So, Honda for over a decade had regulator/rectifiers failing left and right. I don't know a single Honda rider from this era that was't struck by it at some point. NHTSA didn't care and there were many, many more Honda riders reporting their issues than if every person who owned a 2009 1125 were to report theirs.

The Honda R/R problem had very similar symptoms as the 1125 stator problem except that they usually came on a lot faster.

Wanting resolution is absolutely understandable but this is a path to nowhere.

I too would report it and I'd also write a letter to all folks at H-D who are in the chain of command to get this kind of issue properly resolved. I'd write letters to all the major motorcycle magazines and all the motorcycle media personnel.

It is unacceptable that Harley-Davidson is ignoring this and even refusing to provide '08 model stators to replace failed '09 or '10 model stators.

>>> this is a path to nowhere.

I disagree, but I'd also recommend a much broader comprehensive effort to call attention to the problem. Make it a thorn in Harley-Davidson's side.

When I had my 04 yamaha, I was on a board like this.
That bike developed an issue that would cause it to die at random. TONS of people including myself had this issue. Dealers couldn't fix it at first ( mine was in the shop a month ) they figured out the TPS was faulty. Someone posted a link like above to the NHTSA, a bunch of guys filed....

Few months later, yamaha issues a recall!

So I gotta say guys, keep filing complaints!!!

Your charging issue is a safety concern as it could die on the road, make sure you put that in the info!

Good luck!
