I'm getting ready to take a trip and I've had an issue crop up. When warming up the bike it just died....no stutter nothin, like hitting the kill switch or faster. I normally start the bike then put my helmet and gloves on to give the bike a chance at coming up to temp. The bike restarts fine and doesn't stall at lights but it's done this 3 or 4 times now during a cold start. On my last ride I also had one surge that I've never felt before, in gear, at idle, while warm...I have to admit that I may now be getting hyper sensitive. Battery is fully charged, I have tried resetting the TPS and checked the baro orientation (it was partially unclipped but the problem is still occurring). Any thoughts? I'd hate to have this die on me in the middle of a 1500 mile trip. |

My 08R does that from time to time and actually fairly often in cooler weather. Seems to be nature of beast for mine. |

a)is the system charging?...put a cheap meter on the battery at idle and see what it sez...Yes you may have a fully charged battery under "no load"...but once the lights/fuel pump/ECM are all running can the "fully charged battery" keep up?...ECM/CPUs don't like low voltage...if they see it (low voltage) - they just stop computing... b) is there sufficient coolant in the system? - if the temp sensor isn't "wet" it doesn't know what to report c) is the air temp sensor down front in the intake stream "clean" no big butter-flys or Grass hoppers insulating it? d) yes these are cold blooded beasts...I have a similar routine to yours...and yes she sometimes stalls - chk the items above - if it looks OK - just ride the beast! |

Thanks for your replys...keep'em coming if you can think of anything else to check. a) Yes the charging system is keeping up...I think. When the cut outs have occurred the engine is cold and you can't see the battery voltage on the dash. I have looked at the voltage after I've ridden around a bit and it seems to be holding between 13.7 and 14.2v when at idle. I also checked the stator output at ~4,500rpms and I've got ~40 volts on the three leads. b) Need to check coolant level, I haven't since spring. Kind of a pain to check, having to take the pod cover off. I would assume it's ok because the fans seem to turn on and off normally so it must have fluid over the sensor. c) I'll check the AIT sensor...where is it on a 09MY?? I would assume it'ts in front of the intake snorkel. I had the inlet box out when I did the De-Noid and I don't remember seeing it. d) Completely agree. It only concerns me because it's never done that before, riding in the low 40's even, and now it's done it 4 times in a row. I'd hate to be 800 miles from home with the bike not starting....I'll take the risk though, that's what credit cards are for! |

I've had mine die after starting during a couple cold starts. The only thing in common with those times was the low fuel light was on. Figuring maybe it was starving for fuel while on the sidestand because of low fuel, I straddled the bike upright and tried starting again whereupon it started and idled fine. But after putting it on the sidestand again, it started to die. So, make sure yours is not low on fuel when starting and warming up on the sidestand, YMMV. |

Well it looks like I had two problems going on. Unluckily the issue came to ahead about 250 miles into my trip. The stalling condition was caused by a crank position sensor. At about 225 miles the stalling condition got much worse than just cold idle. This, of course, caused a lot more restarts effectively killing my battery. After a rescue tow to the H-D dealer and buying a new battery I was told there was a bigger problem than just the crank position sensor. There was "a strange noise coming from the lower end". It looks like an engine pull is in my motorcycles near future. |
