So I replaced my motor with a used one that was another 08. How can I tell if it has the upgraded chain guides and can I tell if it has the 09 injectors visually? Last I am trying to reassemble my other motor and have no idea how to time the dang thing. I have skimmed the manual but didn't find anything yet. Any help would be sweet. Thanks

The 09 injectors have 4 holes at the end, 2 of which are angled differently rather than just dots like dice have. Also the O rings are a different colour.

Sorry can't help with the chain guards or timing.

To see the chain guides would require removing the engine cases and also a few gears to see them. As far as timing on the top end there are timing marks that need to be lined up. And I'm pretty sure that like most engines all of the timing marks top and bottom need to be lined up and that only occurs when the #1 or in our case front cylinder is at tdc

Ok sweet guys thanks. Is it possible to run the numbers on the motor and see if the guides are the updated ones? Thanks again for the help

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, the updated guides came in the '10 but is available to order and install in the '08-'09. I don't think by running the engine code would tell you which guides are in the engine just what was installed at the time of the build which would not be the updated ones since the engine is an '08

Unless the dealer who serviced the engine prior to you getting it has a service history than that may be a way to find out if the guides were installed.

I thought the guides were a recall for the 08 and early 09 bikes. I guess I will order some up soon and put them in to be safe. Thanks for the help again. It was very much appreciated.

There was a recall/tsb for a select number of 08's but that was it.

I thought that it was only 2009 models that had a problem with the cam chain tensioner ?

It's the fifth gear oil jet that you should be checking for -

So another question. Can I tell the dealer to check it for free since it is a recall and tell them its a used motor I installed. Or is it like once you remove the original engine you loose the recall perk

If I am not mistaken, the VIN is etched into the motor, you could have your dealer check the VIN in HD Net for any outstanding recalls or similar programs. I don't know what the laws are regarding doing the repair or not, but at least you can find out what it needs.

Engine number is on the engine, not the VIN

I just went and looked, there is a number on my engine which is partly comprised of the last half of the VIN. You can easily use that to get the full VIN of the donor bike.
