Hi everyone, I have been trolling for months... and now I seek the wisdom of the BadWeb community.

Typically the bike runs at 13.4 - 13.8, until recently it has dropped to 12.0 - 13.4? Is this a sign the stator is about to fail, and I should have it replaced?(one month left on the warranty).

This second stator has 4k miles on it, and I have a feeling the TX 100+ summer heat cooked it like a Salt Lick BBQ brisket.

Thanks for reading,
scott

The voltage will be all over the place depending on accessories, fans, how hot the bike is, etc. You are best off just getting multimeter, and testing the AC current coming out of the stator. It only takes a few minutes to do, and will let you know clear as day if your stator is failing.

If you have an 09 up 1125 the stator will fail unless your bike is a garage queen, HD has a policy of replacing the known faulty stator with exactly the same faulty part until you run out of warranty when it becomes your very expensive problem, this is the reason I will never be buying another HD in my life. A shame as I really love the Sportsters. Yes I know there will be the odd exception who gets loads of miles out of their stators without problems but Harley has lost probably four or five new bike sales from me as a near 50 year old, because of the treatment HD has chosen to inflict on 1125 owners.

Scott - I'd follow Froggy's suggestion and check out the ACV across the 3 wires (in pairs) in the grey stator plug under the rider's seat.

Look for one pair with a lower AC voltage than the others, that'll be a pretty good indication.

It's definately worth doing and then keeping a close eye on it as you only have another month's warranty..

That is your opinion, of course you have had one 1125 stator and rotor replaced by HD with the 2008 parts and have just bought a 2008 stator and rotor for your other 1125, now why have you done that?

My opinion is a fact, I know several 09s with 10,000+ miles and no stator issues.

And still you will not say why you fit the 08 parts to your 09 up bikes. Fanbois, got to love them.

Problem? No, I live in the real world, not the fantasy world where there is no problem with the 09 up stators.

Last time I checked there is an issue with the 09+ stators, so I believe we are in the same world.

A few posts ago you said "Well that ain't true." and now you say "Last time I checked there is an issue with the 09+ stators, so I believe we are in the same world." Make up your mind, both can not be true! do you want to stop and think for a minute because this is getting bizarre.

Perhaps you should re-read your post.

Which is not true, as its been proven before on here by multiple 09+ owners that get regular use out of their bikes. I even know some locals who aren't members here who haven't had the issue either. Yes the failure rate is too damn high, but it isn't an absolute like you make it out to be.

So once again I will ask, why have you replaced the stator and rotor with 08 parts on your bikes. Simple question. Be honest, it will not kill you.

I did, HD said no and fitted another 09 stator and rotor, and lost me as a customer of bikes for life. Terrible customer service.

I agree with you stimbrell.I just had my stator replaced two weeks ago, after being straight forward and honest with HD and offering to eat some of the expense for the 08 conversion they still put the defective 09 stator and rotor in.I should have had froggy talk to them.I was told they would only replace with the same parts they have removed.HD SUCKS

It's disappointing that a post from a new OP decends into another "HD Sucks" thread.

I tend to agree that they do seem to suck at times (my opinion) BUT I also agree that Froggy was correct that Stimbrels original post was factualy inaccurate and was in fact just another opinion.

I think we'll all have to agree to disagree on this one, and resorting to name calling won't help anyone.

HD will look at alternative options if you can speak to the right person and do it in the right way.

When my stator failed I didn't get another "defective" 09 stator installed, HD paid for mine to be rewound to my spec.

I even got to speak directly to the rewind company and the guy doing the work so I could ask them about the wire guage, the process they were going to use and to request a specific output/finish to the stator.

On top of that the rewind company gave me a 12 month warranty, all paid for by HD.

People's experience of HD does vary greatly depending on who they speak to, or how their relationship is with their dealer.

Back on topic:

Scott - did you manage to check your ACV yet?

Thanks Jules,

I found this post, is this the correct way to test?

AC Output Check
1. Test AC output as follows:
a. Disconnect voltage regulator connector [46] from alternator stator wiring.
b. See Figure 3-18. Connect an AC voltmeter across stator connector terminals 1-2.
c. Run the engine at 3000 RPM. The AC output should be 45-55 Volts AC.
d. Repeat the test across terminals 2-3 and 1-3.

Jules i might be wrong but didn't harley in the UK have the stators on back order for several weeks/ months.I would think at that point they would let you get them rewound by a reputable company. But if they had the factory replacement i would thing that's what they would have required you to use.

Scott - yes mate that's the correct procedure, let us know how you get on.

Shags - yes it would've taken them a couple of weeks to get me a stator shipped from the US, but it wouldn't have been much longer to do that than to ship mine out to a rewind company, wait for them to rewind it and ship it back.. The bike was down for about 5 weeks in total (plenty of time to get another OEM one if they wanted).

I merely told the dealer to pass on the HD that I was unsatisfied and would reject the bike under the "sales of goods act" and expect a full refund less a small amount for depreciation.

The dealer then worked with HD to arrange a satisfactory outcome for all concerned.

Ok... i have some questions. Here is an image of the connector and my multimeter... which I am unfamiliar how to use properly. They didn't cover multimeters during my Fine Arts studies... : )

How do I know what terminals are 1,2,3?

Also, I am assuming I set my multimeter to 50 AC?

Thanks for the help!

No the stator is dc output so set the multimeter to 50 dc. And if you go by your picture you would measure a-b; b-c; c-a or something to that effect since there is one hole not used.

Measure by placing the black probe and red probe into the socket at the same time. Measuring all three wires. Like red probe in hole "a" and black probe in hole "b" rev bike up to 3000 rpm get your measurement. Then move red probe to hole "c" leave black probe in hole "b" measure again. Then move black probe into hole "a" and measure again.

Here is what i did. Put meter on ACV 50.

I put:
Red in a, black in c reved to 3k, meter maxed
Red in a, black in d, reved to 3k, meter maxed
Red in c, black in d, reved to 3k, meter maxed
(i skipped b, because it appears to be unused)

Is this correct?

looks like you are putting out OVER 50 volts ac which is great. spec is like 45-55.

Move the scale to 250V so you can look for symetry. (and not break your multimeter) see if all legs are putting out equal voltage. this is not perfect because it is so subjective. I mean while you are reving the bike the voltage is all over the place, but you may notice if one leg is putting out less than the other 2.
