I have an 2008 R with just over 15 thousand miles on it. I believe the stock battery is still in. The battery died a few times over winter and I charged it up as needed. When riding season started I did not have any problems with it. The last few days the battery light would come on if I was stopped at a light or in a lot of stop and go traffic. Once I get moving it goes away. Makes me think it is the battery. Correct thinking or not?

At one point the volts got down to 11.3 and as high as 13.1

To day if left me high and dry at the shop. Once I got it stated and rode home the volts went from 11.4 to 12.7. To me if its charging it seems like its the battery.

Thanks for all the help
Russell

I agree that it probably is the battery. I would take it out, and bring it to Autozone or similar parts store, and have them do a "load test" on the battery.

Each time your battery goes flat, you will lose some battery life. Being that it went flat on you several times over the winter, it probably is on its last legs and not taking a charge anymore.

Thats what I was kinda thinking. I also forgot to say I have an Erik Buell Racing ECU and pipe but I did all the steps for installing the new ECU letting it idle for 10 min after doing the throtle and key turns. So I dont think that has anything to do with it.

If you have a multimeter, a stator test is simple.

Remove drivers seat.
Find plug with three heavy-gauge yellow wires. Unplug it.
Set multimeter for VAC (yes...*A*C).
Check across all pairs (pin 1-2, 2-3, 3-1). All should be around 45vac at 4000rpm. They should all match each other closely. 2 at 40 and 1 at 30...is a bad leg.

Do you have a service manual? Its all in there...

You don't really need the book. Trust in yourself. Like rat said, pull the seat find the grey plug with 3 yellow wires seperate them. with your volt meter set to AC stick the progs into the holes. 1+2, 1+3, 2+3. with the throttle at 4k rpm.

Easy peasy! Now get out there! :P

When you say seperate them do you mean taking them out of the plug? Or do you just unplug the connector and us the male ends and touching one plug with each end of the meter 1 to 2 1 to 3 and 2 to 3.

Sorry for all the noob stuff never done any of this before

Ya. Female side. Use the one that is physically attached to the stator (the wires go forward under the airbox).
