The voltage drops low at idle or low rpm. The harness was installed by the dealer. I bought the bike used and I would rather run with out it and take my chances. What is the procedure for taking it off?
i have 8500 miles on the original stator, harness update done at around 500 miles...i just did the reverse update...per video...i have 300 miles so far, as my warranty runs out end of october....wow, 14 volts showing for the most part, even at stop lights / urban traffic....if the stator is to burn, might as well be before end of october. ...kinda nice not seeing 12.1 volts at lights, no worry about restarts, ect.
The stator was burned up and it was sent Custom Rewind. It is in transit back and I want to give it every chance at a long life. I need information on how remove the harness upgrade, not just unplugging it. I intend to run the stock vr. A charcoal canister was installed also and I am looking to get rid of it, not comfortable sitting on a plastic tube filled with gasoline vapors. I am not sure of the original hose routing so any help would be appreciated.
It's not real hard. I pulled mine completely out when I had the frame off for the valve adj. Take off the tail section plastic. Clip the zip ties that hold on the relay and wires. Unplug the big connectors both of them there are two the front one (male) and the rear one (female) plug back together (stator back into R/R) Now your left with the three small connectors (2 black and 1 grey). The small grey 2pin connector going to the front ECM is not used if harness is removed. The small black 2 pin connector left in the wire harness in the bike is for the solenoid, plug it in (if used). Then remove harness
Not that I am aware of. All I know is the plug is wired into the ECM to control the relay so it "knows" when to cycle the relay to turn on/off the leg of the stator. I believe someone here like court or froggy might be able to elaborate on this if I'm not totally correct.
I'm curious if the lowered voltage spec is enough to keep the stators alive and un-cooked, without the harness in place, or if there will still be overheating issues...

I thought the issues with the stator are mainly a lack of cooling, hence the harness mod to drop out one phase in certain conditions i.e below 5000 rpm and with a warm engine.
Since my 1125R is now only used for track duty I am seriously considering removing the harness mod

DJ - you are correct. All three phases on, with a hot engine and low RPM condition, causes stator overheating.
The theory is, turning off one leg during those conditions will save on heat.
I was informed, however, that the replacement stators being put in '09s have a lower V output, similar to those of the '08 bikes. No word yet on whether that makes the harness "obsolete"...

Rat, the only way to verify "that the replacement stators being put in '09s have a lower V output" would be to measure the VAC output at the spec rpms and if it is the same as what's in the 09 manual, then, I'd guess, that's not a true statement. But if it measures less, then it must be true and H-D should issue a Service Bulletin or some documentation to update the Service Manuals to inform the tech people at the dealers.

They did issue a bulletin.
And I have measured my stator output - I forget the numbers, but it is in line with the 08 book and with the bulletin.
But that still begs the question - does the decreased output make the harness obsolete, and will it make the stator survive harness-less? THAT is my question.

Unfortunately if the revised stator can put out 400 watts, it has to do that with 12 poles and not 18 which means proportionately more heat being produced per pole than the 08 setup, unless there is some flaw with that logic.
So, will the new design survive without the harness? That is THE question.
before removing the harness for a low voltage problem try replacing the relay... mine has the harness and charges between 13.8 and 14.2v all the time. Relay junked out a couple days ago and voltage dropped down to between 11.8 and 12.8v until i replaced the relay with a better built beefier one from the local auto parts store.
My relay is clicking on-off rapid-fire. Fast enough to sound like valvetrain noise. Swapped it with the matching one out of my Jeep's a/c circuit...same issue.

And...what's the V you get from the relay 'trigger wire' when the bike is running?
woah... mine doesn't cycle at all.. before or after i put the new relay in... when the kill switch is set to "run" the relay clicks on and then the ecm cycles it on or off when conditions dictate. If your relay is cycling like valvetrain noise then i would check whatever point grounds that circuit. When i checked mine, ignition on, kill switch to "run" the relay activation circuit had 12.4v steady. Make sure with a cycling issue like yours to check the power side and ground side separate(power side voltage to a known good ground(battery negative) and continuity between ground side and the negative terminal) Chances are you have a bad connector, bad ground, or partially broken wire somewhere. Ratbuell, it sounds like the harness wasn't installed correctly. One of the parts of the install was to repin one of the ECM connectors to enable the ECM to be able to control the relay. I'm too lazy to look into the details so you can confirm if yours was done, but so far in the past the machine-gun clicking relay was due to that.
I need to check through the charging system on my CR .... I noticed the other weekend that when sat queueing with the engine hot at tickover the volts dropped into the low 12's ... when moving they stayed high 13's to 14.2 Thought i'd replace the relay as it has been in for approx 8000 miles but when i stripped the old relay the contacts don't look like they have done any work at all .... now wondering if the harniess as even been working.
