Ok so back in Dec took the bike in for loss of speedometer and odo. Replaced vehicle speed sensor in Jan. No fix. Finally got instrument cluster in and took for replacement today. Brand new cluster still no fix. What else could it be? Everything else works but gear indicator, speedometer, odometer/ trip |

I don't mean to oversimplify, but I had similar problems (I took it in right away, so it was only for a day and a half. I believe I may have even gotten a VSS error code. The final diagnosis was a loose wire. |

lol... gotta love parts changers. 30 seconds with a multimeter should tell the mechanic exactly what is wrong with it. But since they already went with the expensive route and replaced two out of the three possible problems i would have to agree... either a broken or loose wire. |

Could also be a blown fuse for the horn which powers the speedo sensor. |

Sounds to me like a CAN bus issue. The can bus handshakes with the ECM and transmits speed, odo, trip, info back to the IC. I'd check the connector that goes into the IC from underneath it. You'll have to remove the fairing to get to it. Diagnostics Manual is a good source for troubleshooting. |

I had a smiler problem... The dealer first did a cluster... No fix. Then they did the VSS and it was all good. I have heard stories of damaged wires behind the cluster. |

Look for a break in the white wire between the ECM and VSS. First ensure the VSS has power. Z |

Within 500 miles of purchase of my '08, it was cutting out unexpectedly, throwing codes, all kinds of crazy stuff (including theft error). Short in the harness - once fixed, no further problems - like said before, sometimes it's the simple stuff... |

Has anyone had to do this before that can walk me through it? |
