What weight Amsoil oil to run in these? Im due for an oil change - ordered two filters from E B yesterday - and have a friend that sells Amsoil, so Im going to switch to it. Just want to make sure I have the best oil possible in there, need to know proper weight. And also - how much does it take? I am not sure where my owners manual is, moved about a year ago and lots of things still boxed up |

15 or 20w-50. Drain the oil, including motor screen and filter. Pour in 3 quarts. Repeat when it doesn't shift as smooth. |

20/50 if it's hot (90+) where you ride most, 10/40 for lower temps. Buy and use 3 quarts, make sure you drain both sides and check the screen on the right side on every oil change. |

I'm going to run Amsoil 10W40 in mine. The reason being that there is not a lot of difference at 212F between 50wt and 40wt, but there is a pretty significant difference between 10wt and 15 or 20wt at 0F--I am more concerned about cold start wear than I am about not having enough viscosity when the engine is hot. IMO, Harley/Buell recommended 20W50 because it knew that practically all conventional oils and many synthetic oils would shear out of grade well before the 6200-mile oil change interval. By specifying a thicker oil, Harley/Buell hoped that it would still maintain an acceptable viscosity even after shearing. Amsoil's oils are generally very shear stable, meaning that if I use the motorcycle 10W40, it will start out as a 10W40 and it will probably be a 10W40 (or very close to it) when I change it. I'd wager that the Amsoil 10W40 would have a higher viscosity than the Harley Syn3 20W50 after 3000 miles, much less 6000 miles. Since I ride my bike in temps as cold as freezing, I am concerned about having the oil flow as quickly as possible during cold startups. A 10wt should flow significantly better than a 15wt or 20wt when cold. I'll be switching to Amsoil 10W40 (currently running Mobil1 15W50 Extended Performance) at the 6200 mile oil change. I'm going to send in the M1 for an analysis, and I'll do the same with the Amsoil when I change it in a couple of years. (I have several bikes and it usually takes a couple of years for each of them to go 3000 miles, so I change the oil on all of them every 2 years, in the Fall.) |

Been running Red Line 10w-40 in Loretta for the last 2 years. She LOVES it. Fresh every 6k miles. Z Buell most likely recommended 20W-50 because that's the ONLY weight Syn3 comes in. At my shop, we have Red Line in 10W-40, 20W-50 and 20w-60. (Message edited by zac4mac on August 11, 2011) |

I run the amsoil 10 40 in mine... I w-mailed Erik Buell Racing on Face book and that's what they recommended to me. |

Interesting. I'll have to try 10W40 at the next change (which should be getting into winter). Do the XBs like good 10W40 too, or are they better with 20W50? My XB9 started down to below zero with 20W50 in it. |

Syonyk - I put 10w-40 in my XB and Blast during the New York winters here, then back to 20w-50 in the warm months. |

I used Amsoil M/C oils 50% 10W-40 and 50% 20W-50 this year and I noticed the shifting was nice/smooth and the engine quiet for a few hundred miles but now the engine is noisier and the shifting notchier. I may switch to straight 20W-50 next season or go back to Redline, which worked well last year. |

Short trips, my Uly is fine on 10W-40 still. Starting a new job, a bit further away than the HD/B shop and the 10W-40 is sounding a bit thin on longer rides. I think I'm going to drop the oil and go back to 20W-50, been getting near 100 dF lately. I also think I'm gonna go back to Formula+ in the primary/tranny on the Uly although the RL primary juice works pretty smoothly. Al(American Sport Bike) saying Erik(the MAN) advised Formula+ for his XBRR is swaying me. Loretta will stay on Red Line 10W-40 for the rest of her life. Z |

Formula+ works fine despite its relatively weak additive package. I've run it in the Sportster with good results. |

I am going to switch mine from 20W50 to 10W40 next oil change. Reason being that all other motors built by Rotax run 10W40. I think the 1125 was spec'd 20W50 because that is what the HD dealers have in stock...not because it was best for the bike. |

got the 20-50 amsoil in now but have lost 1/2 qt in 600 miles. switching back to repsol 10-50 which i didn't use a drop in 2500 miles. no clue why... |
