Thinking of doing this. Couldn't find a thread describing what parts needed in detail.

Is it just rotor and stator? Do case covers need to be swapped?

Tips?

Thx

Rotor
Stator
Stator Cover Gasket
Oil

That's about it. There are threads on here with pictures describing the stator removal process - they're well worth a read as the cable run from the stator up tot he VR is a bit "tight" to say the least.

You don't need a new cover BTW

Isn't there a tool needed as well to hold the things while trying to get the nut off the stator? I don't have my manuals here, but I thought there was some special tool needed for that.

As I understand it you DO need a new cover!

You do NOT need a new cover. I am speaking from first hand experience; had used 08 rotor and stator installed back in May.

08 stator/rotor WILL fit in an 09 cover.
09 stator/rotor will NOT fit in an 08 cover without machining.

To those that have switched it out... What were the physical differences between the two?

Only diff I know of is -
08 stator is an 18 pole core, 09 is a 12 pole.
09 stator/rotor is larger than 09, so the case was machined for the pair to fit.
08 S/R pair will fit inside an 08-10 "ignition cover".
09-10 S/R pair will only fit in an 09-10 cover, too big to fit in the 08 cover.

You DO NOT need the cover to put the 08 stator in a 09 cover, this is what i am running and i did the work myself. You will need the 08 bolts to hold the stator to the cover as they are longer other then that, gaskets and oil.

That is what I said above.
You CANNOT put an 09-10 S/R pair under an 08 cover(who would want to??).

08 S/R pair will fit ALL years 1125.

I wonder if he size of he 09' is the issue. If it's bigger maybe interferes with oiling?

Has anyone added oil directly into the case through the sensor hole?

I don't think it'd make any difference where you put it in, it'll still circulate with the rest of the oil so you may as well fill it through the errr.. filler...

Well... liquid settles right. So I figure its a place where oil passes through but never really stays. And the most we can fill is to dip stick level. The stator sits higher than that so with a closed dip stick we can add through the stator to raise the level up in the entire system vs just the tiny dip stik amount.

But not sure what added stress this would put on the seals. In cars more oil can be very bad. I was thinking maybe 1/2 a quart or 500ml. So closer to 4.

I also think that the issue with our stators is sizing. A few people here have commented that the o8 is smaller than the o9. Some machining was done to the o9 rotor housing to make the new assembly fit.

If that is the case maybe the problem is oil flow limits. The space is now to tight for adequate flow. Thats why the o8's don't burn out. If I'm right even custom rewinds will fail eventually and adding more room for oil won't be more than a bandaid.

To test this we would need an o8 and o9 with a flow meter plumbed into one of the oil cooler lines and see flow rates.

08 Guy here so can't say that I'm feeling the pain with the stator deal. Kinder's idea sparked a thought in my head... has anybody thought about tapping the oil cooler line and running a feed directly in through the stator cover puck with a small jet? Looks to be some sort of sealing sleeve with a snap ring behind the puck, but I don't know what purpose it serves other than sealing up the hole. Definitely looks to be the area you want to target for oil feed but it would probably look pretty ugly.
Just a thought.
