Wednesday afternoon, riding in the far right lane of I-35 northbound (near new braunfels, Texas). Thanks to rubber necking traffic checking out a state trooper in the breakdown lane, and a poor choice on my part to check my mirrors instead of look ahead just when I needed too. Timing was just right and I didn't react fast enough to stopped traffic in front of me. Low-sided the bike right into the back right of a stopped car, close to 70mph. I was knocked unconscious and bounced around the side of the car, slid to a stop in the break down lane. State trooper saw it all. i got up after a few minutes, checked with the trooper about what happened and within 7 minutes was taking a helicopter ride down to San Antonio for eval. I had a small subarachnoid bleed in my brain, some various bits of road rash and some small fractures in my left hand. stayed in the STICU for 28 hours under regular monitoring, then released with direction to follow up with a hand surgeon when i'm back home.

everyone was glad i had my jacket, gloves, and most importantly my helmet on. would surely be dead without that.

I'll be parting out what little is left of the bike when it makes it back to the house. I can see my time on Badweb will be limited, given that there's no replacement bike on my mind right now.

I've been riding motorcycles for 15 years; the last 6 have been almost daily on the street and this was my first accident. Just a bad mix of a lot of elements that ended up a lot better than it could have. Way to be an overachiever, huh?

Glad to be alive.

Glad to hear you're ok! I've been riding about the same number of years and just had my first accident last august. All because of some gravel on the road. Heal up quick and get back out there riding! (on something) Or just fix that, it doesn't look too bad, I fixed mine and am loving every minute of it.

I am sorry to hear about your accident and hopefully you make a full recovery. Thank god you was wearing a helmet and gear for sure. I never ride without gear or a helmet no matter how hot it is here in Florida. Get well soon!

Back in 1978 I slammed my Moto Guzzi into the back of a stopped Mustang at about 55mph because I had been looking behind me (long story). I walked away and all that, but since then I've always watched where I'm going. I suspect you'll do the same. Lucky us.

Watch out for the Vultures !

Glad you came away from it relatively OK, heal fast !

And be sure to get back on a bike as soon as possible, the longer you leave it the harder it is to dispel those demons ...

Forget about the bike, and the vultures.

TAKE CARE OF YOUR HEAD.

I was in a bad wreck 3 years ago. Learning to walk again was the EASY part. I also had two minor (except none are minor) closed-head traumae.

Physical stuff? I'm good. Walking, climbing, riding, everything but running (and even that's starting to come along now). The head stuff though? Still trying to cope. Pay VERY good attention to your head, and trust me when I say this - just because it "still works"...doesn't always mean you're going to be the same now as you were before. Educate yourself, and your loved ones. That was the step I missed - everyone was so concerned with my physical injuries that my head injuries sorta got....overlooked.

If you have any questions, send me a PM. I'm happy to share, if it helps out.

Glad you're OK, and glad you were geared up!

thanks to everyone for the concern and well-wishes.

i don't feel bad about people asking for parts. i'm actually happy that there's interest in them. i knew the GPR would be popular, but hadn't even thought about stators and such. i don't want this thread to turn into a mile long list of parts, but if there's something you want, post it up or email me at nack_nack@hotmail.com. i'll put down names and contact info for whatever parts are requested and get back to you about condition and availability. if you email and i don't respond, my spam filter may be to blame.

as Ratbuell suggests, the concerns about my head are priority number one right now. docs said not to strain for at least 10 days following the accident. any spike in pressures could bust a pipe up there. wife and family don't want that...neither do I. i may be able to pull parts next weekend, perhaps sooner if its something easy that my wife can bust loose.

thanks again for the concerns. i really am happy to be here. i know just how lucky i am that the injuries aren't worse.

I'm in Austin and ride I35 frequently. Wacky shit happens on that road all the time. I almost hit a couch the other night.

"Why are those cars scrambling to change lanes? What is that? WTF a couch!" <big> "Holy shit!"

I'm glad you made it. I hope you have a good neurologist and are listening to instructions. It was lucky there was a state trooper nearby. Send him a thank you note.

Heal fast, buy the wreck back from insurance and keep it for parts.
Then get another 1125 and get back on as soon as possible.

Life is too short.

Ditto to what Ratbuell said. Post concussive injury syndrome can appear weeks after a head trauma. If you get symptoms, be patient. They will go away with time. Youth helps a lot.
Good luck. Glad you made it.

Glad to hear you are on the mend. I was lucky too with my off road adventure a couple of weeks ago, just a fractured rib and various bruises. I'm currently riding an SV650 while I collect the parts to repair my 1125. I think the drop in HP is a good thing for me right now.

i was wearing a scorpion exo 400. thanks again to all for the concern and well wishes. i really appreciate it.

finally talked to the driver of the car i hit. her story matches the condition of the bike and it at least makes me feel better about how i must have acted. can't remember the impact, so her story fills in the gap. she said traffic had slowed down, started to speed up again, and then quickly stopped (slammed on their brakes). she said she saw me coming right up behind her and that it looked like i was checking my mirrors and didn't know traffic had stopped quickly. i swerved to the right at the last second and made impact with the back right corner of her car. the front fairing was smashed in and the left pod caught the car and snapped the k-bracket. the rear of the bike went up and to the right and i went airborne. the bike twisted over to the right and landed on its right side, slid to a stop some yards away.

the trooper telling my wife that he saw me slide must mean he looked up after the impact and saw me after i hit the ground. the front end of the bike looks like i hit her car head-on, with the most damage being to the left fork and left pod. it matches the car driver's story perfectly.

at least i know i was aware of what was going on and tried to do something about it with the time i had. it made no sense to me that i would have laid the bike down instead of swerving.

in other news, i've been getting a lot of feedback on parts. there is much interest in the charging assembly. someone wants the cams. is anyone else interested in motor parts? the female thread boss that the right rearset bolts into the engine broke in half and would need to be repaired before making the engine useful in a bike again. i'd hate to pull the stator and cams and be left with an 80% complete motor that i can't do anything with.

unfortunately, the wiring harness broke out of the key switch assembly, so until i can figure out which wires to cross to make the bike turn on, i can't start it to confirm that the motor is fine. i've got a manual and i'll figure it out before i start pulling the motor.

that's all for now. gotta head out. hand surgeon appointment soon.
