Hi everyone, I just wanted to ask two questions before I start a mod that I want to do when I get back to the states. First question: Is this illegal?  Just wanted to make sure before I relocate the plate. Also plate will be properly visible at night because of Screw type LED lights. Second question: Are HID's illegal? I bought myself a kit from DDM tuning (35watt/5000k) for the low beam. I live in Colorado Springs CO if that helps. | ||

I'm not an expert, but I think most states require a DOT approved light illuminating the plate. | ||

All aftermarket HID lights are illegal when installed in place of the OEM lights. They may only be used as accessory lighting. | ||

Maybe maybe not, but it's waving a red cape at a cop to pull you over and the loud pipe won't make him happy either, so I'd say keep life easier and just use a Jardine or such tail tidy. BTW, do you know if that's a 190 rear tire? Looks like it wraps around at a different profile. And I'm guessing not many roads in Nebraska to fix those chicken strips. Not a problem in Colorado luckily. | ||

Duphuckincati Not sure about the tire, I found this pic on the internet, and saved it because i really like the way the back of the bike looks. I have a Jardine tail tidy already but I think having the plate like the picture above would look really cool IMHO. | ||

The plate location is not legal. Lighting is specified in some detail in the FMVSS atCFR Title 49, section 571.108 The H.I.D. are not legal. How theses things specifically impact you will vary with venue. In most parts of the country . . no one will say a word. In NYC there is a good chance your bike will take a ride to impound (laying on it's side) on a flat bed and you'll take a taxi home. Act accordingly. | ||

Definitely has to have a light to illuminate the plate. Personally, I like the 1125's rear extension/license plate mount. Don't know why but I just think it visually completes the bike's lines.  | ||

The plate mount is just asking for trouble with the police, it looks like you are trying to hide it like many of those that run from the police. The lack of a plate light is just the icing on the cake. Installing HID in a housing not designed for HID is illegal too, but as long as you get the 4500k ones, the color will look OEM and you are less likely to get stopped for it. | ||

If you were in SoCal... specifically san diego county... I would tell not to sweat it. After living in socal for 10 years and many thousands of miles I am confident the cops would not hassle you. BUT, you live in colorado. I grew up in Colorado, did the ski bum thing, lived and went to college all over that state. Colorado Highway Patrol, city cops, town cops, campus security cops, national forest rangers stationed in colorado, HATE motorcycles. They hate speeding, hate wheelies, hate stoppies, hate dirt bikes... They will pull you over just to check you out. no doubt about it. LOL, flame away todd | ||

Cops in SoCal are too busy or lazy to pull people over for DOT violations alone. If they do, they are hassling you. The de facto rule by cops here is they will cite you for DOT violations only if they pulled you over for another moving violation, and/or they are on a zero-tolerance mission to bust motorcyclist balls. Like for example, if they go to a sportbike notorious road and go after DOT violations such as no headlights, non-DOT legal exhaust, etc. to discourage you from going to those venues. | ||

Thanks everyone, I'll stay away from the plate relocating for now, I thought it would bring a lot of unwanted attention, but it looks pretty cool. I ordered the HID light's that are 5000k hope that's not too blue, I really don't want to get pulled over for that. But I'll find out soon enough. | ||

Here is mine, been like this all year, (arkansas) been stopped for other reasons, cop never mentioned it, nor did he give me a ticket for the reason he stopped me. The blinker is an L.E.D. strip I picked up at autozone. Can barely see the blinker when its off. I like it.  | ||

Chances are, the plate location will draw enough focus to get you pulled over for something that may otherwise have been overlooked. HIDs, on the other hand...if properly focsed...will not likely get you pulled over in and of themselves. | ||

You could always print the picture, go to the station, and ask the police what they think. They are reasonable people, not robots that feed the machine. In my experience, if you're driving safely and are wearing your gear, they tend to leave you alone, even if you're speeding. If you're wearing jeans and a baseball cap, they profile you as reckless. Use profiling to your advantage and put the plate anywhere you want. |
