My gf & I took the Buells out on some fun dirt/gravel the other day. We were exploring a good winding road, it turned into gravel... and we just kept going.
The only downside is that doing 20mph on gravel for extended periods of time gets the bikes hot - the XB9 fan was running for quite a while on shutdown & the 1125 wasn't cooling terribly well.
Other than the heat, they definitely ran just fine on the gravel!
I ride a mile and a quarter on gravel just to get from the house It's only fun going up hill...going down is tricky.
Not sure I'd want to go off roading on purpose unless it was my spare 1125r...which I don't have...but I think it handles better than a Uly and better than an X-1...but not better than a Blast. My Wife's Blast is great off road.
Looks like you had a nice road trip. Thanks for sharing.
Interesting... my gf does not like the Blast at *all* on gravel/dirt...
I personally think it looks like good fun, as long as you are on something hard enough that the pizza cutters aren't sinking in.
Then again, it might just be related to the fact that for $1000, I really don't care too much about tossing the Blast sideways on gravel, and wouldn't do that to the 1125.
I find it funny how few people seem to think a "street bike" can take dirt/gravel (not so much on this forum, but just in general).
off road is always fun, but why would you only go 20...
It was my gf's first time on not-paved-roads other than gravel parking lots, and she's not terribly comfortable with gravel (though is much more so now).
I've found, in other experimentation, that the 1125 and XB9 are good to about 45mph on unimproved dirt roads before the front suspension packs up and bottoms out. I could probably tweak the rebound settings to reduce this, but I'm not on dirt enough to justify changing them around.

i was just giving you a hard time. i completely understand. most people i know wont go much over that on gravel either. and my fiance is not fond of gravel at all on her bike. if shes on the back of mine she doesnt care, we can do whatever(shes built up way to much trust in my abilities for her own good lol) but on her own bike she will go good and slow(which is fine) if we HAVE to go on gravel.
AUdio sucks cuz the microphone is about 3 inches from the race pipe, but this is the 12s on a local gravel rd. TWIST the THROTTLE more is my motto on gravel
timely thread - Yesterday I wandered into my buddy's cottage road with loose gravel, tight turns on steep hills and she handled fine at walking speeds. My first time in such environs. Seeing this post has added to my confidence to rough ride 'er again!
No more off-roading for me thanks. 20 mph sounds reasonable 180 kph did not end well. I don't even remember the upside down part of it ..... Anybody have a shiny white air box cover? Oh ..... and a front master cylinder ..... mine seems to have a very large piece of wood sticking out of it
My first bike was a 05 yamaha fz6, buddy had an xb12xt and said we were going on a ride with another group. Next thing I know I show up at a dualsport club were I end up taking the bike through sand, mud, and super loose dirt. Scariest thing ever for just having the bike for less than a month at the time. Although offroading is second nature now, I wont venture the cr on anything other pavement, thats what the klx250s is for.
