I'm still in a little bit of shock at the moment. Basically, I went out to the bike this evening to take it for a spin (I live/park in an apartment complex) and when I went up to it I noticed that the ignition module had been tampered with. There are very deep gouges, and it looked like first someone tried to stick something down INTO the ignition, and then tried to get down around it to pull the whole assembly out. I just called the police and will file a report shortly. This, obviously sucks, even more so because I want to sell the bike and this complicates things. So, as far as fixing goes, the bike is unridable (can't start it) so I guess I either need to get a tow truck or replace the ignition myself. Is fixing it in my driveway possible? |

Is the fork locked? If not, you can bypass the ignition. Either way, it isn't hard to fix, you can get a new ignition barrel from a dealer that matches your keys, then its just a matter of swapping them, you will need the security torx driver from American Sport Bike. |

No, the fork isn't locked. Any idea how much the ignition barrel costs? |

The ignition switch is $104 new and matches your existing keys. I believe it comes with a pair of keys too. |

Awesome! Thanks for the help, guys! It definitely helps alleviate some of the stress of the whole situation. Now, if any of you have any less-than-lethal ideas for theft "discouragement" let me know |

You can enter the security mode and enter in a pass code and the bike will not start with out entering a four digit pass code even if they have the key. |

Dependant on your legal standing w.r.t. the property (i.e. whether you own the land or have a really good relationship with your landlord) then something like this: Protectabike Would be good.. That's a UK product but there are bound to be US ones available too.. |

This is exactly why, if I can't park the bike inside, I sleep with the bike behind dumpsters or in a bag on the ground next to it, on trips. When you are in an air-conditioned motel room and the AC is blasting, there is no way you'll ever hear them around your bike. I actually had a motel owner allow me to park my 1125r alongside his Harley overnight in his garage. (Message edited by two_seasons on July 30, 2011) |

If you live on the ground floor - definitely bring the bike inside (probably the ONLY reason to subscribe to USA today is to put the paper between your bike and the carpet) AS others have said, you'll be stuck a few days waiting for the ignition cylinder to match your keys but parking outside sucks. I've lost TWO motorcycles that way (one in a shopping center - the other at an apartment) |

"get a pitbull and chain it up to the bike or install cctv if you can facing the bike." This guy is a genius Yeah, get an angry dog and put it in the apartment complex so you wont have to worry about losing the bike....just your freedom when your dog attacks someone parked in the spot next to you. |

Saw a guy's bike in the parking lot today. There was an empty holster on the handlebars. A well trained dog will not hurt innocents, just do his job. Z |

Put a cover over it and lock that- "out of sight, out of mind", plus getting the cover off adds one more step of hassle that helps deter thieves. |

Thanks for all the ideas, fellas! I live on the 3rd floor of my apartment complex, so bringing it inside won't fly. I think the bike cover w/ lock idea seems most fitting for me. I do love the idea of the empty holster idea as well, especially since we can open carry in VA However, that's one more things for these low-lifes to steal. Hairy Cannonball, I've already thought about camping out and waiting for the next strike and release my pent-up frustration on the fools, but protecting your property with force isn't exactly "acceptable" in most states outside of TX. You see, most laws in this country protect the criminal vice the victims. |

OTOH, if the lowlife tries to finish the job of stealing your bike and you happen to beat them to a pulp, what are they going to do? Call the cops? You tried to protect your property and the thieves got their ass kicked. As long as you don't kill them....maybe they tripped and fell and broke a few bones....just saying...nothing wrong with beating up a thief with a baseball bat or a pipe. |

I was told once by a LEO that you cannot legally shoot or otherwise cause physical harm to another individual regardless of what they are doing. However, you are entitled to defend yourself should you feel threatened. So, when asked why you continued to pull the trigger after the violator was on the ground bleeding out, it's because you continued to feel threatened. Not me, it's what I was told. YMMV |

I personally know this guy, ex-wrestler, Marine, Iraq, Afghanistan, etc. He's a short, stocky fellow but nobody you want to mess with. Nice guy otherwise. We were at this bar and this guy started to yell at his wife/GF/SO. Pretty soon the guy grabbed the woman and started dragging her outside. My friend intervened. They guy said F**K off to my friend. My friend beat the guy down, pinned him to the ground, I called the cops. LOL! Hey, my friend didn't need any help! The bad guy was all bleeding in the nose, and probably had a broken rib too, who knows. Cops came, took our statement, that was it. They arrested the guy for a variety of charges (drunk and disorderly & domestic violence). All we did was said we tried to stop the guy from hurting his wife, then the guy threatened us (he did! he said F-O or get our asses kicked), so my friend kicked his ass. Nuff said. |

Thanks. My buddy kicks ass. If you ever get in the Sh*t, he's the kind of guy you want on your side. I wouldn't want to fight him. He told me he's brought down guys much bigger than him (through combat training, hand to hand training, etc.) and I believe him. The good part is, he likes to help those who can't fight for themselves--that's why he is a career Marine (ret). God bless him. |
