Well, no one would argue that given equal displacements, twins are on par with an I4.
But, most race classes are governed mostly around that metric.
... and, so starts a debate about "what is fair an equitable" that will *never* be satisfactorily answered for all people.
Why not just make an I4? Because of the legitimate, personal preference some riders have for the V-Twin.
Totally agreed on all points and I will add my personal opinion FWIW:
After NASCAR took control of AMA it seems like they are somewhat doing what they do in their car series to keep things equal for the vehicles, even aero packages in each series which brings us to bikes in AMA.
I believe if any series wants fairly equal racing, making the rider more important, they would do it on a strictly H.P. to weight ratio & one minimum weight. Seems to work well enough in DSB (the best racing in AMA) and many other highly competitive racing series both car & bikes. If that works why would they want to add weight to any singled out bike or car for that fact? Weight diminishes performance, just ask any drag racer. It seems unfair for one bike with 160 H.P. to have to race a bike with 180 H.P., and add weight, just because its a bigger cc engine. A series really should not be about cubic money spent but innovation and equal vehicles, not about $200K traction control or any other $$$ bling. Whats next; push button or auto shifting? Maybe just drones or a $1M total carbon fiber bike? Tongue in cheek of course. Lets see "competitive racing" again in AMA and let MotoGP innovate new technology, and its not all that bad right now; best racing series there is. Just my $.02. |

if you wanted a bike race where the rider is more important then you need to look at something like gp-moto2 where the engine is the same through out. Though for me a race where you have different bike companies with different ideas etc is where its at.
If you wanted the rider to be more involved then why and have all this anti-wheelie etc etc on the bike . |

If you have only two bikes and limited recourse for a third wouldn't you keep a little back? (even if subconsciously)
Not only to keep from burning through bikes but also to provide the exposure to your sponsors who in the end are paying for much of the bills? After all a crashed bike gets very little TV time.
Maybe there is a whole different paradigm here. Finish consistently and tune until bigger money comes along allowing the team to really hit the afterburners without concern for the little things, like, the bills. Imagine if RedBull picked up a season and poured some serious bucks into the program. Just a thought... |

or if geico jumped back on the Buell Boat...just with the 1190 instead....does Geico have a major superbike sponsorship with anyone yet??

Geoff finished 3.22 seconds out of 6th. In a 23 lap race that's 0.14 seconds per lap. A tiny change would have gotten 6th. What is going on is some seriously close racing, and we have an American bike in it. That is cool. |
