went in to dealer for right fork seal. took two weeks. asked them to test stator too. drove 3 mi. from dealer and bike slowly died "system voltage" showing. charging showed 11.9v. dealer says winding was really burnt. probably take two weeks more/// what should i have them do? Mostly highway miles 5-7k rpm. 91 oct. 5000'-8000' elevation, de-noided, stock, 2009 R 4700mi . original battery.

Are dealers and/HD willing to do this under warranty?

I've heard of many people that want the 08 parts, but few cases of this actually occurring under warranty
.

It's a struggle.. HD have no "obligation" as such to do so (or certainly they seem to feel that way). I'm fighting with them at the moment but it's not going hugely well : (

thanks for the answers. will follow up with their solution. must be costing harley a lot to just keep replacing stators with another faulty unit. I would be surprised if there are any 08 stators left.

They need to SOLVE the problem.

Apparently BMC employees came up with the solution and provided that data to HD before they left.

If they want to just replace the parts, ask them what prevents the next failure

dealer said the wiring harness causes stator failure? doesn't seem to be the case with people on this site as i seem to remember reading about stator failure after harness upgrade? They have replaced harness, waiting on stator to arrive.

out on a limb here, but if the stator fails can you request the old one be given to you? Kind of like at a brake shop to make sure they actually swapped the pads?

If so i'd look at the custom rewind route...

i'm guessing they wouldn't do it, but ya never know till you ask!

I'm also hoping anony will post up more info on what fix they engineered before shutdown...

You can "request" it, but generally speaking any parts replaced under warranty are property of the manufacturer. I always check the "keep replaced components" box when I drop off my bike for warranty, but all 3 dealers have told me they need to have them available to HD to get paid for the work.

Don't hold your breath for an Anonymous post. I am sure that work was done as employees of Buell and belongs to HD now. It would be an awesome bit of info to "leak", but I wouldn't count on ever hearing it.

It hurts ...... And is a major disappointment ..... To see a company, once an American icon, simply turn their back and ignore consumers ....hoping they will go away. Particularly after some very talented folks, who'd just been told they would be joining the ranks of the unemployed as a Christmas gift, worked so hard, putting in lots of unpaid overtime and weekends, to develop a solution and be responsive to their customers.

Of course, they were motorcycle riders.......many of them owned 1125's. At that time , it was major news that Keith Wandell had just signed up to take riding lessons.

Harley-Davidson should have demanded more for $10,000,000 a year.

Their response ......... Bury the solution and muzzle those who could help.

The only good part is that the innovation and creativity of Buell owners gets to shine......one last time under the HD regime..

No . . but there is s sub-set of folks who have suggested that I am not qualified to comment on the 1125 since I don't own one.

I, at one time, owned lots (over 10) bikes and enjoyed them all . . . some of that experience qualified me to express at least impressions on other bikes.

I sold, about 3 years ago, my Kawasaki's, Honda, KTM, and Yamaha. I no longer comment on those either.

I'm suggesting nothing . . just making certain that that sub-set of folks know, when Erik or I comment on the 1125R, that we are, in their eyes, somewhat unqualified.

I'm cool with that and am dying to see if the same criteria apply when we begin discussions of the Erik Buell Racing 1190RS.

It could be one hell of a silver lining, if you would let it be.

Own something. Fix a thing that's broken. Find a problem, apply your heart and mind, and leave it with the world in a better place.

At it's best, it is profoundly satisfying. At it's worst, it's still better than whining on the Internet. ; )

OK genius...I have a cycle under warranty with a design flaw. And it's

Lot's of coulda-woulda-shoula ideas out there but no real fix that I have seen.

After getting my stator replaced twice I replaced the voltage regulator and removed the patch harness,I used a different regulator than the factory one and have not had any more trouble with the charging system...

Right. There are several things you can do to make the charging system work fine in the short term. Long term, they may be no better and might actually be worse than the stock setup.

You are stuck with a problem, no argument. And it sucks, no argument. If warranty support was the solution, you wouldn't be headed back for the same thing that didn't work last time (though I am happy to see you make HD bleed over an evil decision they made).

As you stated, several interesting tracks are being explored. We went down the regulator route unsuccessfully... the right part can probably help some, but not enough. That effort was "wasted" in the sense that it didn't solve the problem, but it was valuable in that we now know that is a dead end. So on behalf of the community three cheers for the people that took the time and money to figure that out. The first round is on me if we ever meet up.

Next, we just did a rewind to the same spec. It failed also. Again, a dead end in terms of "fixed". But again, an important data point in terms of identifying if it was crappy manufacturing or materials... it probably wasn't, as the rewind appears to have failed the same as the original. First round is on me for those guys also!

Now we are getting information about different rewinds... thicker wire, maybe fewer winds. It's worth investigating, and if it's right on the edge of being OK before (not an unreasonable assumption) then that might be a great solution. Definitely worth one or two people spending a couple $ hundred to sort out.

Here is the path I would follow if it were my problem (and I have an undergraduate BS in EET)... we got some leaked information about changing the oil circulation. I'm a security guy, so I'd start with social engineering and beer distribution. I think somebody who used to work for Buell knows the problem. And where there is a secret, there is a leak. Or screw the leak part, find an ex Buell employee that refused to sign the confidentiality agreement for this severance package, and email him and ask him for help. I don't know who that is, but I'd start with the guy writing magazine articles about all the stuff Harley told people not to say. ; )

If I were a mechanical engineer, we probably have enough hints that somebody could solve it that way also. Maybe easy, maybe hard, we don't know yet.

Here is the silver lining: Move the problem forward! Research something! Think through something and post it, and engage in thoughtful debate. Send a $20 to somebody else trying something. Phone some buddies and manufacturers, and see if you can get any ideas from them. Carefully stalk the Erik Buell Racing pits until they have that cover off, then bust out the telephoto and look to see what they did. Search the other Rotax bike forums, and see where they are having luck. Try winding your own (it's hard, not impossible) with fewer windings, and with better oil flow. Try things, and fail in entertaining ways. : )

My personal experience has been that when I am in one of these crappy situations... i can sit there in crap, or I can start shoveling. Even if I still smell at the end of the day, trying to make it better makes me feel better.

And sometimes, after a bit of shovelling, I've not only cleaned up my own corner, but I've cleaned up a bunch of other corners for other people as well. It doesn't happen often, but when it does, it feels fantastic!

That's all I mean. I'm not unsympathetic, I put 30k miles on a Tuber, and I currently drive a Saab with 140k+ miles... I'm no stranger to mechanical misery : ). Sometimes I'll sell something or scrap something and move on. Generally, I'll find a fix somebody else bled all over finding. Occasionally, I'm the one that does the bleeding and finds the fix. That last case, even though it costs me the most, is the most personally satisfying.

That's my silver lining...

Compare the 1125 to the 1190 motor...

Without opening other arguements, I think everyone can agree that the 1190 motor is based on the 1125 motor. EBaRRR redesigned some percentage (5%, 50%, or 99%...it really doesn't matter for this conversation) of the parts to meet their design requirements for the 1190RS.

These redesigned parts all fit onto the stock 1125 motor. Perhaps with some modification required. None of this is in violation of any agreements with HD, or else EBaRRR would be locked in a nasty legal battle with HD and the 1190RS would not be seeing the light of day. Everyone still on board???

Furthermore, HD gave up the rights to the 1125 motor as part of the buyout of the contract with Rotax. Rotax still retains rights to the 1125 motor (It's still on the Rotax website if you are a doubter).

Taking BMC & the 1125R/CR out of the equation, EBaRRR is well within their rights to design and redesign parts that improve performance of the stock 1125 motor. Since these parts can be fitted onto a stock 1125 motor, logic would dictate that they could be fitted onto a stock 1125 motor that just happens to be sitting in a 1125R/CR. If those parts were purchased from EBaRRR and later fitted onto a 1125R/CR by lets say someone who was not bound by any agreement with HD, what legal recourse would HD have? The answer is NONE.

So, why would EBaRRR not have the right to redesign the charging system on the Rotax 1125 motor, when they obviously have the right to redesign the other 99% of the parts on the motor? EBaRRR can legally sell that redesigned charging system for the 1190RS. If the buyer of that part chooses to fit it onto a 1125R/CR, they have the right to do just that.

I don't see any legal pitfalls.
