Hello everyone Im not proud of this post but im going to tell everyone so maybe just maybe I can figure out what exactly went wrong!!! Late last Thursday night 12 hours before d day at mid ohio my father and I installed my stator. I will admit it was very dark out and hard to see and we were in a rush. We soldered two legs together and two wires from the regulator together. The bike ran fine other than it not charging at all. What damage would be caused from doing this? The stator read 0 volts AC on all legs it also looks perecfectly fine, CR rebuilt it and said they didnt see any damage. Any thoughts as to what I've got myself into?? |

We soldered two legs together and two wires from the regulator together. Why did you do this? Are you saying you wired it differently than stock? When you say soldered 2 legs together, what exactly did you solder? The wire leads? If you combined 2 legs into 1 circuit, you probably created a short...kinda like what happens when the coating on the stator melts and fails. As far as damage, not sure. Perhaps it can be undone? Not sure without seeing pics of what was actually done. Perhaps an EE can chime in. |

Tpoppa When mentioning that I soldered two legs together I mean I took one leg pumping out roughly 50 volts to another leg running 50 volts and ran them into other all accidientally I had poor lighting in the work envoirment and it got me!!!! |

Did you send it back to Custom Rewind after you connected the wrong wires and they saw no damage? I'm confused. I imagine that soldering two legs together would damage the stator wiring beyond repair. I would check the windings to make sure they are not open or shorted. If it's installed in the motor, I'd check for AC voltage between the three legs. If there is nothing, or major differences between legs, it's probably bad. You did have your meter set on AC voltage to check your stator, right? |

If you connected leg to leg...you soldered in a dead short. |

I checked all legs after discovering the issue and 0.0 across the board. I sent it back and custom rewind. Even though it was my fault, he would do me a favor and fix it for free!!! Excellent service btw. But i should receive it this wednesday and get it installed correctly!! |

After you disconnect your manual short, you may still exhibit proper "open" continuity...but that doesn't mean you didn't do damage. Step one - push bike into garage or basement. Step two - TURN ON THE LIGHTS. Step three - pick up tools, proceed with repairs. |

I guess I don't see the problem. Even if you took the combined 2 legs and fed it outside the stator, it would go through the VR at that point. So your VR is probably toast. Once the VR is fried, no more power distribution. So the problem is what again, besides working in the dark? |

only one leg was hooked up to the stator, the other two were connected together creating a loop. I Should have my stator back today. Is there anyway to tell if a VR is bad by looks or using a multimeter |

Just replace it. Not worth the small $. I'd never have a new/rewound stator installed without replacing the VR too. Piece of mind. |

Stator is back I tested the newly rewound one and guess what!!! my brand new multimeter isn't reading ac volts correctly. So it was probably fine before I sent it back. but anyway 45 miles so far it hasn't dropped below 13.6 this is with no harness upgrade but with the high voltage Im considering running the harness. Especially because it was hitting 14.0 volts in town at stop lights!!! |

14V is fine... it's when you get 17+ you need to be concerned.. The harness is a "personal choice" thing.. If it makes you "feel" better having it there then reconnect it.. |
