Was there a specific issue? Sure, everyone always wants more power, but it's not like the 1125 is a touring bike was there a specific issue with 2008 charging system not providing enough juice? Sure seems like it was a solution looking for a problem that caused a bigger problem |

For Max HP, sportbikes use the smallest possible charging system. The 2008 was thought to have too weak a charging system, but it seems there were other issues (instrument cluster draw) which may have mis-directed Buell into tinkering with a charging system which was adequate. This is my recollection. I am open to other interpretations of the evolution of the 1125r charging system. |

something int eh cluster was killing the battery and there was not enough output on the stator to charge it. they did a shotgun fix of installing the bigger stator and fixing the cluster issue. im oversimplying of course. |

When the 1125R first came out, one of the popular accessories people were installing (heated grips) seemed to task the charging capabilities. I believe BMC had upgraded the charging system to accommodate the issue, but as a number of people know, it has caused more problems. |

There were two issues contributing to this: Baggermike: Remember him? He had one of the early 1125s and lives in Boston. He had the bike farkled out to the max and was on BadWeB (in a polite way)complaining of a loss of charge and dead batteries. I believe Buell was listening in and this might have sparked the idea of upping the charging system's capacity. Quiescent IC drain The earliest models came with an Instrument Cluster that had a drain on the battery when the bike was turned off that could under some circumstances drain the battery in a matter of days when parked. I believe issue #1 drove the charging system change aided by issue #2 before it was fully understood as a 'drain" by Buell. The interesting part is that Buell reacted to the extreme condition (Baggermike) and the IC issue was preventable by shutting off the bike with the kill switch before turning off the ignition. The cluster was updated and made available under warranty for those that could document the drain in cooperation with a dealer. The upgraded charging system -hmmm maybe rushed to market. My 08 still has the original IC and charging system after all these years and miles. The original battery too! It will be five years old in December. |

Drain due to IC programming issues, drain due to ECM issues, winter in general sucking the life out of batteries, heated gear, riding at low RPM, highbeams on, all contributed to the 08 stator not being able to keep these bikes charged. Buell fixed the battery drain bugs and boosted stator output to fix the issue. |

I am positive that cost played a role also. If you compare the 08 & 09 stators, the 09 is absolutely of cheaper construction. I'm not claiming inside info on this, but I've been around enough assembly lines to know when a part is replaced, the bean counters won't approve budget for a more expensive part, unless they are forced to for compliance reasons. |

I'm in with Asbjorn about Mike's influence. I did a couple of serious voltage/temp/load tests to assuage his fears to no avail back in 08. Mike is a really nice guy, I talked to him a few times on the phone. Still would love to chug a beer or 3 with him... He wanted to run bagger farkles on a hot-rod... I love my RevA 1125. She has heated grips and I use them often. I don't use my hi-beams much, I have HID lo-beams, 6800K - 35W. I still have the original battery/stator/rotor/regulator-rectifier and 27k miles. BTW, I got Loretta 18DEC07. early adopter, so is Ozzy. Z |

So glad I was an early adopter. Still running great no gremlins original battery from 08 etc etc etc. |

27K, eh? Beats me by 9K. "Ivan" just rolled over 18K on the original stator and wiring harness. I do shut the bike down by using the kill switch first, then the ignition key... but that was an issue for the 08 models (not my 09). I ride all year, and use heated gear in the winter (and I have the heated grips installed). I also use the bike 50% of the time for commuting. Interesting... |
