The scary part of this is that helmet use is down across the US according to the NHTSA. Helmet use: 2008 - 63% 2009 - 67% 2010 - 54% The study doesn't try to determine the why, they simple count people who are wearing helmets and those who aren't. This is also an interesting study because they don't depend on people telling them if they do or don't wear a helmet, they actually send people out into the field to do counts at various points in each of the states. The thing you never see though is the stats Helmet use VS Deaths PER MILE RIDDEN. DISCLAIMER: I am a helmet guy, but not a helmet law guy. It would be friggin hilarious if helmet use was down, but so was deaths per mile ridden! Interesting how you never see the relevant information in the news, just the emotional drivel. I'm sure the info is out there, but the reporters just don't bother with that, cause it's not sexy. R | ||

Wearing a helmet isn't ATGATT. All The Gear All The Time is helmet, gloves, jacket, leather pants and boots--protection for every part of your body. I'm also for helmet use but against helmet laws. Some days if I want to cruise to lunch or run an errand a mile or two down the road and don't feel like wearing a helmet, I want the freedom to do so. | ||

He would have had a MUCH higher probability of surviving if he'd worn a full face helmet. No guarantee that he'd live, but without one, well, it's kind of a Darwin thing I think. I don't mean to sound harsh about it, but it's safety equipment. I wear most of my gear all the time, even when it's 100 F out. My only concession is just jeans instead of the leather pants during the summer months. Otherwise, I'm wearing Sidi race boots, leather jacket (padded, CE armor) gauntlet style gloves and a full face Arai. Yeah, I get hot, but I'd rather sweat just a little than bleed and be in a lot of pain if/when I go down. Just about every time I stop in at a gas station I get asked "Dude, ain't you hot in all that gear???" I've been lucky so far every time I've gone down that I had sufficient gear on to cover my butt. Numerous dirt crashes and I guess 5 on the street have taught me a little bit about it. Only banged my helmet down hard once, but if that don't teach you anything, nothing else will. When it gets too hot (100+ F) I take the truck/van/car. | ||

I wear my gear all the time, only thing I wear is Jeans if i'm doing a quick run some where, quick meaning around the corner to return a movie at redbox or another local errand. Same for my GF she wears gear all the time, she has Gloves, Helmet, Jacket, boots, she just needs pants. I found these work great for hot weather when you're riding. http://www.motoliberty.com/prod_detail.asp?Prod_ID =730&ImgId=2590 Basketball shorts and these and its not bad at all when you're moving. As for the post that was he choice and he paid for it. While we all won't agree with if it was smart or not, and if helmet laws shouldn't be in place. I for one am for it, I just see it the same as a seatbelt law. In IL its your choice but seatbelts are a must or you get a ticket so whats the difference really. | ||

I don't agree with seat belt laws for adults either, though I will always wear one I'm old enough to remember the lies they sold the seat belts on. "it will NEVER be a primary offense" BS | ||

As someone with more insight to this particular accident than most people here i am only saying it was not a surviveable crash either way... and what you read in the media is what they want you to think/know! I never ride without one and never will, it is just sad the amount of attention this is gotten and people would rather make a joke out of it than think about the man who died and his loved ones left behind. | ||
