I've read countless posts on how the new Race ECM setup is the best thing money can buy for our bikes. I get that, but I've got a different question from what most ask. Back before EB-R came out with their pre-programmed ECM series, there was a ECM hack/tune offered by a company in Ohio. I'm wondering how many people on this forum have switched from the unmentionable option to the EB-R ECM and what the riding impressions are. I imagine the race ECM would be a better fit than a tweaked stock one, but I'd like to know what the opinions are of others who have done it already. Any changes in power, smoothness, MPG,... anything at all? Still worth the investment? Thanks for your time. -Kevin |

Why would the Erik Buell Racing ECM necessarily be a better fit ? Many people can tune an engine. I've tuned mine using the not to be mentioned program and am very happy with the outcome. I've read here and on other boards that people haven't been happy with the purchased tuneup. For whatever reason.. I tuned my CR using my butt, the gas gauge, and the occasional view of the rear spark plug. Yea, it took me a while, a lot of mistakes, but no hurt parts. One thing about doing the way I did (and many others), I learned how to use the program to tune my engine. That way, if I decide to change something in the intake or exhaust, I've got a good idea on how to change the tuneup to match the new part(s). I like learning how to do things. I didn't have a clue how to modify the mapping in an ECM...now I do..! And for some reason, if I decide to "try" something...I can. Mike |

Currently, I use the one from the Netherlands guy. I did use the diy one. The diy one (along with my trial and error) gave me stronger midrange and better mileage. However, I think the current one, along with their (loud) exhaust, gives a little better top end. I do miss that big mid range hit, though... |

I hope Puzzled chimes in. Pretty sure he had one of the original ohio flashes, and switched to the fuelsolutions.nl one on his street bike. I'm not a computer guy so hacking is not an option for me. Been thinking about the programmable setup from EB Racing... but honestly I don't think I need more than I have now. |

therealassmikeg- i dont have them, but i can say that with the EB ECM it wouldnt neccesarily give you an uncontrollable amount, it would just make the bike run the way it should, while getting to most efficiency and reliability without the lean issue of the EPA programming, better MPG, lower temps, and smoother rideability....with an extra kick in the pants lol Jake |

I have both. With a stock exhaust, hands down the one form Ohio is better. (Message edited by spectrum on June 19, 2011) |

I got the Fuel Solutions map in for a year now and I love it!!! The bike runs cool and has plenty of getup and go and mine is the CR tune. The tune also has no problem with 1" or 1 1/2" QC or open there is still plenty of power everywhere. |

Brum - You say that you can go from 1" to 1-1/2" restrictor and have "no" problems... Guaranteed you don't have it as good as you think..! Plugging the exhaust that much with no fuel mapping difference and it runs just as "good", somethings not correct...or...as good as it could be..! Mike |

Not just as good it's down a little on power and will get a bit hotter with the 1" but I have had no problems with it breaking up or loosing complete range the bike runs fine either way |

I got Dave's tune early on and it was a total godsend. Turned a freaking popcorn machine into a controllable machine. Down the road a ways, it was time to pay for an update or buy an EB ECM. I picked the latter and am very happy with the result. Z |

I have both Eb-R & the Ohio, they both work well, I prefer Daves but that is my personal preference although fuel econ is bad @ 10ltrs per 100kms, but I have a heavy right wrist. I do chop & change between them both. |

Twin motorcycles offers some very good tuning options as well. I havent tried the EB ECM so I cant offer any opinion on which one is better, but dris at twin motorcycles has done an excellent job of tuning my bike with stock exhaust and a jardine can on it as well. Both times very happy with the results |

Unlike some people that are instant experts at everything they turn their hands to, I know my limitations. I don't have a Dyno or a datalogger so the idea that I could do a better job mapping the ECM than guys that spend hundreds of hours tuning does not seem realistic. I used to tweak the ECM on my X-1 using tuning SW, but the Helicon is a different kettle of fish. Back in 2008 I tried a piggyback unit and it was crap. I went for the Erik Buell Racing Race ECM when it first came out and have no complaints. |
