My magneto (stator/rotor combination) got me 44+ miles home today. Mostly on its own charging capabilitys. The starting has been acting up all week. I was hoping the battery would last till Friday. Everyday a little worse. Well...leaving work today was its last start..! After an hour or so cool down after getting home, I checked the battery voltage, was 11.9. The stator in this case is the second from Harley/Buell. 20,775 miles, 09, CR. Mike |

I'm happier and happier every day that I got an '08. Of course, I'd like the swingarm spools of the '09+ but I wouldn't want to trade potential charging system reliability for that little bit of convenience. |

those spools are traps... I scratched the swingarm.. |

So is the stator dying or the battery? |

1_Mike, I'm of the opinion that Harley did finally change the replacement stator a couple of months ago. Mine went out, the stator was on back order. I looked into all sorts of replacements or rewinds. My dealership (which is exceptional by the way) called up the highest ranking Buell tech they have access to (no one I could ever reach and that is for sure!) and he insisted they had upgraded the part. My mechanic who installed the part told me it did look a little different (sadly I did not get to see it as they really wanted to get me back on the road again!). Finally, the charging numbers I'm seeing are just slightly less with it, probably to reduce heat. I think Harley finally got tired of replacing multiple stators for the same customers. Its just not cost effective for them to do that. Harley is very slow to respond as they are run by "bean counters" but they do eventually come around. If its still under warrenty, let the dealership fix it IMHO. If not, you have a choice of the new HD part (it does have the same part number which really drives BadWeb members here crazy!) or go to Custom Rewind and have them rewind your stocker which will be cheaper if your paying for it. I know many others will accuse Harley of falsehood and I understand why but I think HD did finally fix the problem. Do your own research through your dealer and see what they say and please report back. Regards! -Tutt |

We'll see, I of course have the extended warranty. Did they pull the harness off or is it still there? EZ |

FWIW there has been talk of heat being the main issue for stator failure. After speaking with many people I have come to the conclusion that the COLOR of the epoxy (when stator is new) is an indication of the temperature rating it can withstand. Tan... our stock stators epoxy color is "low" temp. Neonish green is high temp.. like 500 degrees.. Custom Rewind is using the green stuff on all BUELL orders |

Tbowdre. you got me thinking/googling. It seems there are two schools of thought in the world of alternator/stator insulations. The epoxies and the powder coats. These powder coat guys have NASA certification. http://www.solepoxy.com/coatingpowders.asp The whole situation is a bean counters nightmare that better materials and some simple engineering as alluded to by Steve_a's post on Thursday, May 26, 2011 - 05:22 pm: "BTW, the 1190RS has a modification to the alternator to fix the stator over-temp issues that have appeared on some 2009/2010 1125s. (the 2008s had a different, lower-output alternator, and don't have any issues). The RS cools the stator with an oil jet, an orifice, if I have it right, that's newly machined into the alternator rotor, an operation that can be done, as I understand it, on old parts. When word or parts get out, I think it will be a popular modification.". Sounds like drilling some holes in the rotor so more oil will get in to the stator area? |

Maybe the Erik Buell Racing site will be up and going by the time I get ready to put it back together, then I can get a little more info on this. |

Finedaddy1 - think balanced rotor when drilling. The compufire has slots on the outside perimeter of their closed primary systems. scroll 1/2 way down this page to see what the compufire looks like. http://www.compufire.com/harley-main.html |
