Well, the belt from Court has been coiled up, under the seat for 2 months. I've ridden Loretta almost every day, she's at 16,200 right now. It took five minutes to get to this point.
I only used tools I will have roadside - my Leatherman Crunch at its best -
All this stuff has to come off...
Took about 15 minutes to get the belt off.
20 minutes later, the belt and tensioner were on and the axle screwed most of the way in.
55 minutes after starting the process, Loretta is ready to ride. With a little practice, 30 minutes downtime is reasonable. Time to see how far this belt will run now.
Now to clean up and head to High Country for the Daytona 200 Party and watch Buells race!!! Z |

Zack: While it's fresh in your mind, can you add a "step by step" chronology to this thread? Thanks for your help, Court |

Great news to see the progress here! I had almost forgotten about the whole replacement belt durability thread....Spring must truly be approaching!!! |

While it's still fresh in my old mind... this is all done on the side-stand, BTW. 1)Remove the rear seat and get tools out. 2) Remove both belt guards, inner fender, rider's seat(to get spare belt out), rear sliders and front-pulley-cover. 3)Remove shifter and axle pinch-bolt, loosen axle until the belt gets slack(LEFT HAND threads!!!). 4)Remove the swingarm wedge(Black insert at top of swingarm) so belt can be removed, then remove the belt tensioner/rear-set. 5)Open tensioner(it opens like scissors) and remove from belt, slide belt off pulleys and out the top.<< Note the flat spot on the front pulley - it points to the front to get belt on/off>> 6)Unroll spare belt and mount on pulleys. 7)reverse 5 thru 2. 8)Put everything away and ride into sunset smiling. Half-hour to an hour on the side of the road; hardest part, as Ccryder(Neil) said, was breaking the axle loose with a small lever arm. Next hardest is getting the tensioner on. Might try Tim's(No_rice) idea of mounting tensioner, then "walking" the belt on to the rear pulley by rolling it... didn't feel that brave. 14 miles on the belt so far, if it breaks on the way to work, I'll call the crash-truck. If it happens on the way home or a fun ride, I'll swap belts there. I have the belt I fried the back off as a spare now. Periodically check the muffler mount bolt that goes thru the idler wheel. Mine backed out and froze the idler, then melted .100" off the back of the belt, it's my spare now. I was showing Don Casto where the bolt was yesterday and found it loose on a new CR. One less thing to worry about. Y'all have a nice day! Z (Message edited by zac4mac on March 07, 2009) |

Bump and an update - Down with a bug for my last "week-end" so no miles then. Hooray for daylight saving time... even after getting out of work almost an hour late, I got about 60-70 miles in yesterday before sunset and plummeting temps. Loretta has 236 miles on the abused belt and all is well. Fuel light came on at 180 miles, at 192 she took 4.5 gal. Hopefully I get out close to "on time" today, I'll run up to Wyoming and get some serious miles. Looks very promising for carrying a spare belt under the seat, and being able to use it. Zack |

Thanks for the procedure. I`m printing it and filing with some others I have been collecting. I can`t hardly believe that Loretta is almost 17 now. It seems like yesterday that she was a "new born". |

so looks like as an "emergency" backup, a new belt stored under the seat will get you home or to a dealership cheap insurance and short downtime, much better than calling someone and waiting for their arrival...and still not rideable when they get to you hopefully Zack has put the "removed" belt under the seat "just in case" time to oder a belt (Message edited by bobup on March 15, 2009) |

Actually, I have the perfect belt under the seat now. It's the one I friction-burned .100" off the back by poor maintenance. It's a lot more "limber" than the good belts, so it rolls up easier and smaller. Got out late yesterday but still managed another 140 miles on the belt. It now has run 371 miles after being rolled up, under the seat for 2 months. Question for Court or Buell R&D - Should I send the belt in now for forensic testing, or run it till it snaps? Zack |

Yes, it got archived. http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/290431/420032.html?1235914927 I am riding... came home for lunch. Added 45 miles today, windy but warm here. Thursday-Friday looks good, 1k mark? Z (Message edited by zac4mac on March 16, 2009) |

Court/ Z: This is a stock belt that was folded under the seat. So if I store it in bags then it will be no issue than just changing a belt on the road.... All I have to do is invent a collapsable 4' breaker bar. Thanks to all. Time4DOT training |

A 10" crescent wrench would do the trick. Belt is holding up well, I am accelerating hard to normal. I've had her up to 133 once, over 120 more times than I can keep track of. I'm certainly NOT babying it. Gotta get back to work, I'm home for lunch again.. Z |

Update - passed 17k today, 17010 in the garage. Belt's still running fine with 810 miles. Tires are too cold in winter here, tire just spins. In the Summer, I can get little wheelies. At 5000 feet, the air is thin. Z |

As far as Neil's longer wrench for breaking the axle loose, I did this - Took a cheap 7/8" combo wrench and cut it in half on the bandsaw. A piece of tubing to connect the pieces and voila -
Fits under the passenger seat with the tools and rags. Zack |
