Need some opinions. Got in a little wreck Sunday. Taking advantage of the great PA weather I was trying out some new roads and I navigated a turn badly. Hit guard rail on the right, I continued, and the bike did some sort of dance and ended up on the left side. Had it down to about 20 m.p.h. when it happened. No severe injuries, sore all over. Wondering if I should send in the damage to insurance? Damage includes. 1- left and right pods 2- Stator cover 3- exhaust headers, slight dents 4- right side fork tube and slider (dented) 5- fairing (slight scrape on left edge 6- left mirror (slight scrape) 7- Jacket (ripped open) 8- Pride ( severely bruised) I know I'm looking at about $1000 just in parts. I have a $500 deductible. |

I don't know if it works the same in the US (I assume so) but in the UK that'd mean you'd either lose your "no claims bonus" m(a %age discount taken off the total cost of annual insurance) and/or the bike would be recorded on the HPI register (which decreases it's resale value). TBH with your deductable (and assuming your confident you can do the work yourself) I'd just pay the full $1000 and do the work. The pod covers are (as you know) cheap, the fairings come up on ebay reasonably often (I have a spare one at home already just in case) so that's easy. It's worth checking that the brackets behind the pods escaped unscathed as they do occassionally break too.. TBH dependand on how "bad" the stator cover is damaged I'd potentially sand it, fill it and add some Erik Buell Racing case savers (if the case is still oiltight). The important thing is that you're not too badly injured.. glad to hear that |

You could aways heatwrap the headers if they aren't too dented... that'd keep costs down and help keep things a bit cooler too... But not if the dent interferes with airflow inside the pipe.. |

Here is what I would do. Most of those parts are cheap and easy to replace, so I wouldn't bother with insurance. They will jack up your rates and you still would be out of pocket quite a bit in cash. Pods/fairing - The plastic has the color molded in, which means with some sanding and buffing you can restore them to good as new. They are cheap to replace should you rather not deal with it. Stator cover - I would get the covers from Erik Buell Racing. They probably could of prevented the damage, but you can use them to hide the scar till you get a cheap replacement cover on Ebay or something. Headers - Erik Buell Racing sells some takeoffs if you want to swap them, depending on the damage I might just wrap them. Fork tubes - How bad are we looking? The tube is dented? Your best bet then is to replace the forks, it is possible they have been bent. This will probably be your biggest cost of the repair, but you can occasionally find like new forks with trees on ebay for a few hundred. Mirror - I'd live with the scrape Jacket - Get a new one, Newenough.com and MotorcycleCloseouts.com have stuff cheap if you don't mind digging through the closeouts for last years styles. There have been a few sets on eBay over the past few weeks... $250 for a set not that long ago including the trees.. |

Last year I picked up forks, trees, front wheel with rotor and tire, and an axle for $500. All the stuff was taken off a 08 1125R that is now used for racing so the owner switched the front end to Erik Buell Racing components. |

Thanks for the info. Gotta save up some cash to get it back on the road. Think I may try to fix it all over time. Gotta take care of the fork first. |
