Just looking for some opinions. I bought one of deans RT2 exhausts, and he said the Erik Buell Racing ecm for the RT3 exhaust should work fine. Will there be any chance for damage if I go ahead and run it with the stock exhaust until the RT2 shows up? BTW I'm giddy as a school girl waiting for the new exhaust! |

Wait for it. Stock pipe will run very rich with the RT tune. |

Well that's the type of answer I was looking for. Thanks again for the help. I look forward to hearing the exhaust in person! |

Dean - Wouldn't the O2 sensors back off on the richness? |

I've been watching mine for some time now. I've put the stock pipe on twice in the last year, both times it ran almost 2 points richer than it did with any of my custom pipes. At cruise, I see 14.5:1, WOT, 12.7:1 or so and this is with the custom pipe. At cruise with the stock pipe, it's maybe 12.8:1 at cruise and 11.5:1 WOT, give or take a half a point. This was with the standard race ecm cal that I've been running since last June. I haven't seen the AFV's move at all on either my stock ecm (race cal installed) or with the tuned race ecm. My wideband sensors might be hosed, but I doubt it. It's not really enough to do damage to your bike, unless you do it for a LONG time. You'd end up washing out the rings eventually from running rich, not to mention fouled plugs. Personally, I'd wait. I went the wideband route to make 100% sure of what the engine was doing after I started building pipes. Yes, they run a little on the lean side in stock trim, but throwing a race ecm tuned for a specific pipe at a stock pipe, it's going to run rich. I don't know how much the race ecm compensates for the O2 sensors. Narrowband sensors only work in a very small range and it's either on or off like a switch. If it's above the mapped curve, it will lean it out, if it's below it, it will make it run richer. I haven't looked at the maps to see how much more fuel is added and don't really plan on it. I still get a tiny bit of surging that I can feel at partial throttle, but it's 100x better than stock ever was. I'm pretty sure it's from the O2 sensor feedback that's causing the surging. |

I ran the original generic "HMF" cal and the stock pipe for a bit. It was so much better than the stock cal that I forgave it any richness. I never ran it on a dyno but the finesse it brought to throttle control was a real blessing all Winter. I doubt I did any damage. If anything the engine runs better now with 26K than it did after break in. |
