I am having an issue with voltage spike. If I run the bike with bright headlights on it doesn’t do the SYSTEM VOLTAGE/no turn signals or tach very often. I was watching my voltage and it will sometime go high as 18v with bright lights on it will go around 15v. I took it to HD and they can't replicate the problem.. So therefor it's not a problem that can be fixed. All I get is a com error.
Ya I know it's prob. the voltage regulator, but hd won't just swap parts to fix a issue that can't be pinpointed.

You are seeing 18v, that pretty much pinpoints it to being the VR. Next time let it blow the headlights that way you got proof it happened. I don't think it will throw a trouble code.

lol, I am right there with you on that idea, but I road 450 miles yesterday and it won't blow (even with high rev). When this problem happens you can hear a loud wine and with rev it gets louder.
In your opinion will this cause other problems down the road...ie batt. Death, headlight blown before it's time, ecm failure, stator failure?
Why would the System Voltage kill the turn signals? Break light works, lights work, horn works.

Biggest thing I would worry about is the ECM and the cluster, they aren't designed to take 18+ volts, they can potentially become damaged by this.

Turn signals are controlled by the gauge cluster, I'm not sure why they weren't working for you in this situation. I had the system voltage message when my stator was failing, the turn signals still worked for me then.

I do have the turn signals not working with the system voltage on video Iphone 4 and was able to catch the volts at 16.3..
Maybe I should just go and get a gps some HID lights and a radar to wire into my bike and that will fix my overvolt ;O)

1125, you bike's broke. H-D is responsible to fix it. Don't mickey mouse it and wind up blowing headlights or worse.

When my VR was overvolting like your's, I was able to ride the bike the 40+ miles to the dealer while watching the volts climb and toggling the high beams on as required to bring it down to normal. The dealer, a very good H-D/Buell servicing one, was able to read the Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) and pinpoint a failing VR, fixing it under warranty.

Maybe you might have to ride it around the dealer's block a few times until it displays "SYSTEM VOLTAGE" on the IC. Then if they can't duplicate the problem, you should call H-D Customer Service and politely explain the situation. In all likelyhood, CS will call your dealer's Service Dept and attempt to get them to properly diagnose and fix your bike.

1125rcya, mine has done the same exact thing twice both times voltage regulator was at fault. when you can here that whine the stater is full fielded vary bad thing. I don't think the high beams will blow but the low beams will. Take it to dealer and tell them to ride it until it acts up.

I rode all day and couldn't get it to repeat the system voltage. Strangest thing..
On my way to chicago from indy it happed like 14x on my way back it happed like 4x and now the thing is hunky dory!
I know the problem is still there so I am going to take it to HD and show them the video. If HD won't replace the voltage regulator I will call customer service
# anyone?

I got the chance to ride by my dealer today! Low and behold my buell mechanic decided to go beyond HD customer service and did some searching of his own over my voltage spike (system voltage). Needless to say he had a voltage regulator waiting on my arrival. My fist ride with seems to be promising I was hammering down 1-2-3-4-5 and no sign of the over volt. My bike is now running between 12.2-14.0 volts!

System Voltage/ no turn signals is hopefully a thought in the past. My mechanic hopes for the same. (good sign)
