Depends on who you talk to.

Here goes...
The 08 stator was 420w, this wasn't enough to power all the accessories.
So for 09 they upped the stator to 520w.
Some people say that they increased power output creates too much heat which "frys" the stator. Some people think the extra output causes the voltage regulator to have problems, and that the fluctuation in voltage is not from the stator, but from the voltage regulator.

Options to fix
1. let the dealer keep putting in new stators while under warrenty.
2. change to the 08 lower output stator. This requires that you buy an 08 stato and rotor. If you want to go this route call Erik Buell Racing.
3. You can have your stator rewound, cost ~$150.

You probably can do the work yourself. you have to remove a couple lines from the oil cooler, unbolt the cover, remove the cover, lock the crankshaft and undo the stator nut.
read the service manual before you try it.

There is a ton of threads, and a ton of discussion on the subject. If you haven't yet, use the search.

Long story short, they overheat due to a lack of oil flow, the fix is to put in a 2008 stator or get the original one rewound in the aftermarket. It isn't exactly the easiest thing for a home mechanic fix, but it is doable.

Just read up on it...! It's all here, many times over.

They build up too much heat, there is a coupla reasons for the end problem.

As far as rewinding it yourself...
It's like the money question.
If you have to ask...the answer is no, you can't.
While it's obviously possible...reread the above sentence.

Again..read up on this site..!
About 140.00/150.00

The stator is a small factor if it goes bad. You can't replace the feel with another bike!
Replacement? lol I have the warranty. Would I buy the bike again YES 7k+2K down. Has the bike met every expectation YES. Would I be happy with an inline 4 no. Ride, Laugh and Forget your fears. (Just a guess someone somewhere is betting on my life against my life insurance policy to make money off of my possible death (suckers I'm invincible ; )
I know that your questions haven't been answered yet.
Bump lol

Stator, rotor and cover is over 900.00 from ebr. A rewind with cut back wattage is 140 shipped to your door. It has a two day turnaround made with better materials. The mosfet is 120.00 for the deluxe kit. A total of 260.00 dollars will get you a one year warranty on the stator, a reliable over rated regulator, and more money for other mods :-)

My bike charges better than it ever has with setup. Good luck with your stock stator. Don't let it ruin your summer sitting in the shop. Take care of it now while you can.

Just to add a question here.... So the old one couldn't properly power all the stuff and the new one has power to spare. So if you are running some additional accessories like PCV, Autotune, hid's etc. would that help or hinder?

Idk, I was running hid lights, 12 volt plug for gps, and some led lights for my tail. Still fried?? Some of you 08 guys might want to send it to customrewind.co and have him add a few watts. Theres a happy medium and I hope im there.

Curve_carver, what is your voltage at idle with both fans running, ie: coolant temp at 190 or above. I'm just curious if a rewound stator has enough power output to charge the battery in the above scenario.
