It was beautiful weather today in the TX Hill Country. After 120 miles of spirited riding, I stopped for a quick break. I tried to resume the ride but when I punched the starter button my cr barely cranked over and couldn't crank fast enough for the engine to catch. The second attempt it wouldn't turn over at all and gave a "System Voltage" error. I tried to bump start it to no avail. I just got sweaty and winded. The battery sure seems kaput. My wife came and rescued me with the trailer just as the sun was setting. It's off to the dealer on Monday. A second stator in the offing? I'll keep you posted. |

Glad you got home. If you don't have an 08, watch your voltage all the time. Don't freak if it's 13.08 at speed, but if you see 12.2 at speed, pull over and disconnect your headlights. Beeline for a safe spot. So happy I got a RevA this time... Z |

Sounds like the stator to me, they suck. I hope the rewound stators fair better, because that is the route I'm going next. |

So how do you watch your voltage? My 08 doesn't display it, unless it's below 12v |

No need, the 08s are known for these problems. |

Not to beat a dead stator,but....Mine died on my '09 last week end at 6700 miles and two weeks after harness upgrade. It is under warranty so I offered to pay extra for overnight shipping. The shop(which usually does a great job BTW)called me the next day and said they would be glad to let me pay the extra for shipping to get my bike out of the shop,"As soon as they could find one to have overnighted to me."As a side note it looks like the stator and cover are cheaper from Erik Buell Racing than Harley. |

The harness doesn't fix the issue. It just prolongs the problem. Then your out of warranty throwing a ton of money at harley-davidson |

I know it's likely to be the stator... but it still could just be the battery, you never know.. In the same way that I could just win the lottery... |

With a CR...you should have the dash set on the water temp. and voltage at ALL times.... This way...the person hanging onto the handlebars "knows" what the water temp. and the voltage is...! Voltage wise...might keep things like this from happening. Or at least, good information for future use. Two of the three things MOST important to an engines livelyhood..! Mike |

I had my voltage regulator replaced, along with new headlights. Back up and running. REX |

You have back up lights on your CR? Does it have a reverse gear to? |

The '08's do not have the stator problems. But you can hit the Display or Mode button (one of them) to toggle to the voltage display. The display always defaults to outside temps but you can toggle through the Display button to get to the voltage readout every time you start the motor. |

It's at the dealer. I asked the service manager to please take a special interest in resolving the charging problem once and for all so I could trust the bike more than five miles from home. We'll see. |

Do you mean it's BACK at the dealers and it wasn't the VR after all? |

They've not diagnosed/repaired it yet. |

Ah yes sorry - my bad, I read Rex's post and for some odd reason attributed it to you... They're taking their time aren't they? |

Chandler was pretty fast. Called the day I took it in and told me I was running 18 volts or higher. They ordered the parts and got it in immediately. they kept me updated the whole way. funny on the volts. I had been watching mine as I drove around. nothing ever showed that high? I was wondering if the dash was wrong? |

Rex, when my VR took a hard dump, the IC showed as high as 18 VDC, that is, when it would recover from displaying SYSTEM VOLTAGE. There is a certain amount of delay with the iC when it comes to displaying voltage. It's likely trying to average a continuous series of varying voltages, so what you see is not quite a real-time display. |

Reading this makes me happy i bit the bullet and sent my stator to custom rewind monday.Mine should be on it's way back tomorrow. Did away with that Ducati Voltage regulator as well.(my dime but worth every penny to have a reliable bike) Just glad mine stator made 10,000 miles vr was repolaced @ 5,000 under warenty for over volt just after the harness install |
