If I ride in cold weather the voltage is higher due to the fans not running as much and draining the battery. If your voltage climbs to the 14s at speed the stator is working. If it drops to the 12s at idle the harness upgrade is doing it's thing. A failing battery (which the harness upgrade may cause) could also contribute to volts dropping over time. |

My battery is new, it was replaced by the dealer. It's also worth noting that I didn't notice any change in voltage after the wiring harness install, until several weeks later. My battery is also hooked up to a tender every day. This is what I think happens. With a new stator, even with only two legs working at idle, it puts out enough volts to run everything and keep the battery charged. That is until it starts to burn itself up. Then it's just a slow death after that. How many miles are on your stator Tpoppa? I got 6k out of my first one, but without the battery tender and my short 15 mile commute, I think the mileage would have been significantly less than that. I have around 6k on my second stator. The harness upgrade was installed and the VR was replaced at the same the stator was replaced. The battery was replace about 2k ago. My bike behaves the same now as it did the day the stator was replaced. I don't believe that a leg slowly drops output then fails. If a leg shorts, it fails. That is what the stator test in the owners manual seems to suggest. Out of curiosity, how long are your typical rides? If you are always using a tender, you probably wouldn't see volts drop on shorter rides. My usual weekend rides are in the 400-500 mile range. I usually monitor voltage to see if anything behaves differently under different conditions (temp, traffic, idling, etc). |

Rex your voltage regulator is bad going over voltage likely blew the bulbs in the headlight . Try your brights. HAd a hard time proving this to my dealer and getting them to replace it under warenty |

Rt, what did you have to do to convince your dealer that the VR was going bad, list the number of times it showed SYSTEM VOLTAGE on the display or tell them to ride it for x miles to verify it does it for them rather than take your word for it? I'm in the same boat, new stator and harness upgrade is installed but it's still the original VR and I'm getting multiple SYS VOLTAGE messages sometimes. That's the bugger - it's not consistently repeatable, but I hope it malfunctions when the dealer checks it out. |

I don't believe that a leg slowly drops output then fails. If a leg shorts, it fails. I agree. My stator failure was sudden and unexpected. If anything slowly goes, it's the battery and maybe that can be mistaken for a slowly deteriorating stator (post harness installation)? (Message edited by fresnobuell on March 02, 2011) |

My rides are 100 miles or less, but usually no starting and stopping. There is more than one way for the stator to fail. |

http://genebitsystems.com/david/MotorcyclePrep/sta torfailure.htm This guys stator was charging until the engine got hot, that's what mine would do for a while. I also test my stator with a volt meter by unplugging it with the engine running. All legs were producing voltage, but 1 was significantly less than the other two. Never saw it coming. I had been keeping an eye on my Voltage read out. Never saw anything out of the ordinary. My Bike has 3500 miles on it. And will be out of warranty in July of this yr.. |

My stator burnt out a 13,000 km which was about 5,000 km after the harness upgrade. The relay for the harness upgrade was also burnt out when they checked it. After the harness upgrade the voltage would drop to about 13.2V when the bike got hot. A couple of months later it was high 12s, and then low 12s high 11s with a battery warning light. When the bike was cooler I was getting around 14V, even after the winding failed. Since the repair it is back in the 13s. When it starts to get back to 12s I'll get it tested. I expect I'll get 3 stators under warranty. |

What is the final solution to these problems? I'm thinking about getting an 1125cr and want to know the single solution to resolve this issue if/when it happens. Can someone compile this info? Thanks! |

Jespo_m2 this discussion has been going on for over a year for 09 and 10 bikes. HD says it is heat. There are several opinions and responses. Some have put computer CPU fans on their regulators, some have relocated to a cooler spot and replaced with 'mosfet' type regulators, some are doing custom rewound stators, some are putting more oil into their bikes, others are doing warranty and extended warranty claims. some use battery tenders religiously. The jury is out right now. I purchased my CR with 39 miles the harness was on. When my CR broke down at 2200mi I got a new stator. last summer with 6000+mi in heavy urban traffic I killed it and another time it just died. Both times no restart until a minute or two later. Scares the heck out of you as you walk your bike out of an intersection. Everyone thinks I am in left field when I say the Erik Buell Racing ECM does not keep the electrical system alive for street use. After the two NO RESTARTS last summer I put the OEM ECM back on and knock on wood the systems is close to stable. The Anonymous poster is supposedly an Erik Buell Racing insider has admitted in the context of electrical system issues that the Erik Buell Racing ECM is not for street use...the fans come on sooner and that their electrical system management is a different algorithm altogether. |

Danny, FWIW I agree with you about the Erik Buell Racing ECM handling the electrical issues differently than the stock ECM (and I have no idea what those differences are just that they do exist.) It does make some sense since the Erik Buell Racing ECM is "Race Only," but we also know the vast majority of those sold see little racetrack use. I have resigned to doing as little city riding as possible as 1) my bike doesn't like it, 2) nor do I. I know not everyone is in the same boat unfortunately. |

Do we know whats been done in the 1190rs yet.... setup wise? I've stuck with the O S B setup which retains the OEM electrical settings in the ecm....no probs so far. As far as this updated HD stator is concerned I don't think chroming it and giving it a cool name like "Flaming skull Edition" will help.........sorry couldn't help myself |

Well I have had the Erik Buell Racing race ECM and harness upgrade fitted for a long time, bike is on a battery tender and I have fitted the FH12AA VR - so far so good (it'll probably fail now I have said this). When/if the stator dies it will be rewound for 475w - or I'll pick up an 08 rotor and stator. |

Sparky i had a pretty repeatable failure. Start bike ride about a mile the voltage would get high enough to display system voltage until i let it idle 5 ish minutes and it would come back and be at 16.5 volts and then come down to the 13.5 . So i left on glove off and put my iphone in accessable pocket and when it went dark i took a video. Still had to call the 1800 I hate hd number out of the owners manual to get them to understand they where going to pay my medical bills and find me a new 1125r when the battery exploded under my ass. The only thing the Erik Buell Racing ecm has to do with voltage is the recall relay(very small piece of the puzzle. The Voltage regulator handles everything else. |

got the news back from the dealer on my CR's problem. Voltage Regulator. Was putting out 18 volts. They have ordered a new one, and new headlights. Dash seems to be okay, according to them. My dash did not show 18 volts though. REX |

once the voltage get to 16-16.5 the dash goes into protection mode and darks out shows the system voltage error. |

I did not get the opportunity to see my new "upgraded" factory stator today before my mechanic put it back on, but he said it looked much different from the stock 09 one that I fried. Different color insulation and maybe thicker. It was either from a different supplier or the same supplier but changed. But it was DEFINITELY different. -Tutt |

As of yesterday at 9771 miles, my 1125R has a new VR and a new clutch actuator to work with the new stator and upgraded harness that was installed a couple months ago - all warranteed. Put 60 miles on it from the dealer and no problems. Yay! |

According to my dealer, the part number hasn't changed since ever. It is rare that a part will keep the same part number after its been changed in some way. |

Usually yes. Look at the latest instrument clusters, only difference between the one thats on my bike and a brand new one is the software version to fix the LFL issue, and that has a new part number too. Newer belts, new part number. New header clamps, new part number. I've seen parts change but the part number stays, but I can't name any off the top of my head. |

Usually any change to an item will generate a new P/N ... Having run logistics organizations for telecom vendors, I can recall standing on tables and shouting a few times about the nightmares of not being able to control inventory (or the customer experience) by not rev'ing a P/N ... It will drive you mad! Mike |
