Since the Buell shut-down was announced in Fall of 2009 and they were pretty much shut down by the end of the year, I rolled the reported 2009 and 2010 Buell shipments together and got this chart. Anybody else looking at this and thinking neither Buell, nor the economy is the real problem with Harley?

The problem is that they didn't make the fat profit margins on the Buells that they did with the Harleys. It easy to make a big profit charging top dollar for designs that you dont have to pay new NRE (development) costs on. |

wow Elvis 30 to 1 on the y variance. In 2002 Buell sells 11,000 and HD sells 275,000. In 2007 Buell sells 12,200 and HD sells 348,000. 2.5% growth or 21% growth? |

HD has a problem. Market did REALLY well last year yet their numbers continue to decline. They will be laying off 250 - 500 more in the 2nd quarter. Kind of a shame to see such an icon flounder. |

I totally agree, Danny. Look at this graph, showing my Buell ownership. Completely out of line with what HD decided. ============== An company is interviewing 3 accountants. The first accountant walks in, and the hiring manager presents him some numbers and asks the candidate what they mean. The candidate says it looks like the company is improving. The manager thanks him and sends him on his way. To the second candidate, the manager shows him a different set of numbers and asks the same question. The candidate says the company is doing worse. The manager thanks him and sends him on his way. To the third candidate, yet a 3rd set of numbers are shown, again with the same question. The accountant says, "what do you want them to say." The manager hired him.

Court your right, it is a shame to see HD going down hill. I hated them dropping Buell but HD is an American company with American employee's. No other company can match that vtwin harley sound. BUT this is what happens when greed and corporate men and women can't put down the putter for more than a hour. |

Anybody else get that mass market email showing off their "new" bike based on a stripped down softtail? It's the "rebellious darkline" model. Kinda made me upchuck a little. The guy riding (? Or was it the big ass fan madding it appear windy?) had lots of protective gear on. Helmet, open vest, fingerless gloves, jeans & t-shirt. Safety first, you "rebellious" rider! Looked like the only thing missing to complete that "image" was a pair of assless chaps. |

>>>>BUT this is what happens when greed and corporate men and women can't put down the putter for more than a hour. Their current management is succeeding in really alienating the remaining management folks. No one will (likely) talk publicly but you can cut the tension with a knife as folks at 3700 Juneau try to figure out who will be in the next "herd thinning". They've systematically gone to each plant, in WI, PA and KCMO and held the union hostage with their "take it or leave it" offers. The union guys can't fight back . . but the effects may become evident in what they build. Vicious cycle. |

Sure you can manipulate numbers, but 4 straight years of declining sales says something to anybody who bothers to listen. |

The reason why H-D is floundering is because of the people who run H-D. The big three automakers (GM, Ford, Chrysler) have learned their lessons a few times over. H-D is only learning it now. H-D management, and to a certain extent most of their clientele and dealers have been keeping their eyes wide shut on the competition thinking the Baby Boomers will continue to buy and the new customers will keep coming. They are finding out today they are wrong and have been wrong for quite some time. Don't feel sorry for H-D. They are their own worst enemy. What H-D needs is an enema, just like what GM had when the US Government took them over. The first thing the Gov did in GM was fire most of their Upper Mangement starting with their ex-CEO Rick Wagoneer. They went down the line from there. Then the government moved on to their board of directors. That's how you get things done in a corporation that large. |

>>>Then the government moved on to their board of directors. Likely the kiss of death. The moment the government oxygen tube, the same one they used to suck the bond holders dry giving them 29% on their investment while paying the UAW 100%, is removed GM will have to deal with reality. I wouldn't buy a GM car if my life depended on it after what they did to the American taxpayers. |

Be mindful that HD sales numbers were declining in 2 years that my 401(K) was up nearly 20% each year. They were robbed of the ability to blame it on "the economy". |

Might be valuable to recognize that it is now 2011 and that the data extends through 2010. Or if you want to cherrypick a period to show H-D in a good light, then why not just focus on 2002-2004? |

Danny, Are the tampons that you're selling compatible with older models? Specifically high mileage ones with a loose rear end. (Message edited by bwbhighspl on January 26, 2011) |

Well ....... I guess it will be easy to watch the next Year and see how this Blackline sells. What would you say is the most innovative feature of the bike? Did I see the price right? Is it $16,000? What.... I am curious .... Is the last $16,000 most folks here bought? |

Blake - see how you are. According to you I picked the wrong years. The subject was hemorraging. WTF? I am 11 years older than you MY BOY! I was kissing girls when you were in diapers! They say if you don't respect yourself you can't respect others. It is kind of like you have to love yourself before you can love anyone else. |

Danny, >>> I am 11 years older than you My goof. Let me rephrase... Try not to fantasize about me so much; it's not a healthy thing for an old man like you. >>> According to you I picked the wrong years. Actually, what I stated was that "Might be valuable to recognize that it is now 2011 and that the data extends through 2010. Or if you want to cherrypick a period to show H-D in a good light, then why not just focus on 2002-2004? " |

I put a little more than that as a cash deposit on a new 4x4 truck, but it's been a LONG time since I did that. 2004 as I recall and it was paid off by 2005. Still have the truck, I'll drive it (as weather requires) until it dies, then I'll probably rebuild it and keep going. I think I only put a little down on my 1125, maybe $1500. |

In the world of motorcycles . . once you pass the $9,999 mark you are in rarefied air. Manufacturers are painfully aware of this and decisions get made . . . . A) $9,496 with a Showa suspension or B) $12,800 with the Ohlins Then you the the equilibrium forecasts . . . but you are dealing with two very different grounds with a small common area . . speaking Venn-wise.
