Since I can see the steal belt after 4,400 miles on the factory tire, I figure I'm ready for a new one. I'm really curious about running a 200/50/r17 for 2 reasons. I think it will look meaner since its on a bigger bike, and 2, because its the same height as the 180/55/17. Looking on other forums I have seen people talk about the 200/55/r17 clears better due to the taller sidewall. I'm really up in the air on what to do. There are also 190s that could be a good inbetweener. Can someone please set me straight. Seen lots of pictures on XBs, but not for 1125. |

Depends on what you want...if all you want is a "look" then you have convinced yourself...the wheel is not wide enough for a 200 to have proper profile. |

I just put a 200 on my CR lastnite, not for looks or anything. I bought a set of tires for a project that I parted out, the tires were leftover and brand new, so I figured why waste them. No ill effects so far, but I will keep you posted. They were a pain to put on though. |

I guess it depends on what's important to you. Conventional wisdom says a 200 tire is too big for a 5.5" rim. If profile/static looks are most important, then it's probably not overly dangerous to spool it on - although you're gonna have much slower to react steering and might have that "fall into corners" feeling from the now taller/steeper side carcass as you come off the top/middle of the tire on corner entries. I'm comfortable with the information I have - that the 190/55 is already a bit of a stretch for this rim and is best possible trade-off for pure handling concerns -- and that's what matters to me. If a 170 gave me the feel I wanted, I'd spool that on. |

The Erik Buell Racing bikes do not run the stock rim, and some racing classes require a specific tire brand and size. |

If im not mistaken the 1125DSB runs a 5.5 with a 190. at least according to the spec sheet on the website. The others all have 6" |

I know the old Buell Race Mg wheel (I have two) is a 5.75, and handles a 190, even though I still run 180s. On the side of the wheel it's marked 5.5. But line it up to an OEM wheel, and it's clearly slightly wider. Also, like shoes, a tire's marked size isn't a promise that's consistent brand-to-brand, or even model-to-model. A 190 Dunlop DOT is a "narrow" 190. They don't even offer a 180 that I know of in true race rubber. That's what's run in AMA. When I try a tire, I have to measure it and reset my bikes geometry (generally rear ride height and fork tube settings) to make a true apples to apples comparison. |

Buell ran the 190/55 on the stock 5.5" rear in MotoST with good success. That's what I based my choice on. And Shawn Higbee's description to me of how it would affect the bike was, of course, completely accurate. It works for me. It's different. You might not like it, you might. |

Froader4life, I'm running a Metzler Marathon 200/50x17. It's not really considered a sport bike tire, even though they offer them in the sport bike wheel sizes. I like it so far. I live in Texas, and 95% of the roads around Dallas don't have many curves. I wanted a flatter contact patch since I'm a drag racer at heart. I like accelerating hard in a straight line. Don't get me wrong, I still like hitting the twisties, but at a moderate pace. At my age I don't need to prove anything. But back to the tire. It does everything I need, plus it does have the cooler fat look. It did slow down the response slightly when first leaning into a curve, but didn't kill the handling as bad as I thought it might. Hopefully it will last longer too. (Oops, forgot about my heavy throttle hand) For a street bike it makes sense for my ridding style. But if you like to do track days, there are better options. Hope this answers most of your questions. |

Cool guys! Thanks for the help. I'm going to go for the 200 just to see if it works (I always have to push the limits), but know that the chances of me getting a 190 next time is pretty high. Thanks for all of your inputs! |

Froader4life, it is a 50. I commute alot on my bike. Not that that is a good reason to spoon on wider rubber, but I hope to hit some back roads this weekend, then we will see how it feels. But for now, I have seen no ill effects. |

The DSB spec Dunlop 190 tire is not much bigger than many 180 tires. Those bikes all use stock 5.5" rims. Going to a 200 will not give you an ideal sidewall profile. Check the tire mfgs race tire websites, they all list the tire dimensions and recommended rim widths. |

I tried a ntech 200 rear (was free) didn't like it... but that was on the track. Only pic (by gron4) I have showing the rear, didn't have it on long...

So first I had to kill the old tire. Then the new one. 200/50/r17. Plenty of clearance and no problem mounting or installing. Only have like 4 miles on it, so I will repost my impressions of ridablity later.

What is the brand of tire that has a harder middle and softer sides?? Mine is a commuter as well. |
