I see 14 volts until my bike reaches 170*, then it drops to 12.7-12.9 with the occasional 12.5 while cruising. Is my stator on it's last leg? I used to see 14 volts during steady cruise. Could a cooling fan going bad cause a large drain on the charing system? The fan comes on at 170, anyway to change it to 190? |

Loose/dirty ground? (Message edited by ezblast on November 21, 2010) |

The battery ground is tight and so is the ground on the frame. The dealer just replaced the battery, that was their fix. |

I wouldn't worry about the charging system unless the voltage drops to below 12.0 VDC. If you get a "System Voltage" indication on a dark instrument panel (voltage could be too high or too low), then you'll know something is amiss. Until then, just ride the bike. |

Mine is doing the same thing. One more data point, when I put it on the battery tender, it takes hours before going green as opposed to only minutes before the voltage dropped. Did the new battery restore the 13.8~14.2 hot running voltage? |

Try this bit and see what happens- http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/290 431/601431.html?1288005217 |

Mine has been holding 13.7-14.4 in traffic, but no long rides. Sunday I took a real long ride with some high speeds, with a return leg in traffic, and when the engine got real hot, the voltage dropped as low as 12.2 at a light, rising to the low 13's when riding. Today, after cooing off all night, it's back to the 13.7-14.3 variation. Hmmm. |

Did the new battery restore the 13.8~14.2 hot running voltage? No, i only see that kind of voltage before the cooling fan comes on. Once the fan comes on at 170, the volts drop to 12.7-12.9 at any rpms. I did the ground wire on the regulator, didn't change a thing. I've now added an extra ground wire from the battery to where the passenger pegs mount, just for the hell of it. Does anyone have the electrical service manual? Does it have the AC voltage output specs for the 09 stator? I'm going to check it myself, since my dealer doesn't seem to want to. |

the extra ground wires is a neat idea but is a waste of time. the chassis of the voltage regulator is isolated from all aspects of charging/regulating functions. the mounting of the regulator to the subframe is only used for heat disapation. as for the voltages you list, they are all normal and show no reasons to worry. the fact that your voltage drops a good bit when the fans come on is not really any reason for worry. if they are pulling too many amps, the fan fuse will blow. the temp at which the fans turn on can be changed but i wouldn't do it on mine. if you are running ebr ecm, 2 things to take in consideration. 1)the ebr ecm you have may or may not be configured for operation of the stator control relay harness. 2) the ebr ecm may also be configured to give 100% duty cycle(max power) as soon as the coolant temp reaches 170F. the factory tune uses a batt voltage vs coolant temp table to determine percentage of power sent to cooling fan. running just from memory, 170F and 13.0V about 70% duty cycle for cooling fan. this will pull less power to the cooling fan because the temp is with in reason. |

It's a stock ecm. My only concern is that it's not what I normally would see. I rode to work yesterday and the coolant never reached 170. My voltage during steady cruise was 14.4 volts for 10 miles or so. Battery still showed 12.8 volts with a volt meter and that was after the fans quit running, bike off, so it's not not charging. It seems like a huge waste of power to have that one fan spinning when i'm going 50+mph. |

I would perhaps try re-installing the regulator, perhaps a floating ground? Weird. EZ |
