We have a pair of 2008 1125Rs that we use strictly at track days. My son like it so much he bought another 2008 1125R with 10,000 miles on it. I don't think it used oil before we bought it (the last owner rode it on long rides), but in the first 500 miles of our use it used 1.5 quarts of oil. When he twists the throttle it makes lots of smoke and now there is a film of soot on the rear wheel and the brake rotor. Could we have broken a ring? I don't think he over revved the motor. What else? Crankcase breather? any idea would help. thanks

New to 1125Rs but based on other bikes ring / piston wear or damage, can also be valve guide / seals but normally worse at start up after sitting in that case.
My guess would be piston and/or rings although mileage is low to expect normal wear and tear to be the problem. Hopefully someone with specific 1125R knowledge will reply.
Good luck.

It's almost due for a valve check, so do that and drop the motor/lift the frame instead of rotating. That way you could look inside the cylinders through the spark plug holes.

Its so hard to check the oil on these things I would verify that oil amount with another 500 miles of riding. I had something similar happen to me. I now think that I didnt follow the corrected oil check procedure. I would start with a full oil change with filter and 3 quarts of oil. That way you would have verification that you can get a correct reading from the start. With the oil consumption you are describing you should be adding oil on every tank of fuel. Hopefully its just a mistake.

Ride motorcycle for approximately 10 minutes. Ride at least 5 miles 8 kilometers to ensure the oil is hot and the engine is at normal operating temperature. Readings taken with colder oil could lead to an overfull engine condition.
.
Hold motorcycle upright and vertical on firm level ground. An uneven surface will produce a false oil reading.
.
Idle the motorcycle for three minutes. Shut off the motorcycle.
.
Wait for three minutes after shutdown before reading the oil level, or false readings may result.
.
Unscrew and remove dipstick from oil filler hole. Wipe dipstick clean.
.
Insert dipstick into oil filler hole, screwing dipstick in completely.
.
NOTE: Refer to Recommended Engine Oils. Use only recommended oil specified in Engine Lubrication: Buell 1125R Models.
.
Unscrew and remove dipstick and note oil level. An indicated oil level between MIN and MAX (measured after performing steps 1 through 6) is acceptable for safe engine operation. Oil should be added in 3 to 7 fl. oz. (100 to 200 mL) increments, depending on how far the level is from the MAX reading. Confirm oil level by repeating steps 5 through 7.
.
NOTE: If the oil level is at (or above) the OVERFULL mark, drain oil at 7 fl. oz. (200 mL) increments until the oil level is between the MIN and MAX marks on the dipstick. Repeat steps 1 though 7 to confirm proper level.
.
Hand tighten dipstick into oil filler hole.

Boys...the man said it's getting all over the back of the bike.
Doesn't much matter what the dip stick says..!

Old_Lizard -

Just do a leak-down and a compression test...! That'll check the ring condition, the valve seat condition, the head gasket condition.

Good luck.

It does it it was too full to start with and an incorrect check process is followed.. (i.e. checking when cold)

Funny...too full a crankcase...may...push oil out the crankcase breather...NOT past the rings and out the tail pipe..!

And I'd bet if there was that much oil going into the airbox and into the chambers...the engine would run like real crap!

This is a dry sump motor. Crankcase level shouldn't change unless you are REALLY too full. If you have oil coming out of the tail pipe, you have problems.

Really?

Im an auto mech by trade and Ive seen it happen on a few cars before. They ran fine. With the screwed up oil check procedure on the 1125 I can certainly see this happening. Also there is a lot of soot that comes out of the tailpipe on an 1125. I can see that being mistaken as oil consumption. Why jump to conclusions without checking the simple things first?

checking the simple things first, one thing at a time is the basis of all good science.

is the little foam filter piece still in place at the end of the crankcase breather tube?

The two most common thing those new to Buells(especially the 1125) do is overfill both oil and fuel.
There's a reason for that.

Don't fill the fuel past the INSIDE lip of the frame.

Follow the arcane Hot-Check oil instructions to the letter.

After you get past that, enjoy the ride.

I have to say that I've followed the oil check procedure to the T, but I've never gotten the same exact reading twice. It is a major PITA. It would be easy to have too much or too little oil, but I can't imagine being so overfull as to have the symptoms described.

Thanks guys, I checked the breather and that is clear. I am just going to roll the engine forward and do a leakdown check to make sure we didnt break a ring or something. Does anyone have experience with valve guide seals going bad? It seems to really put out the smoke when I gas it. Even in neutral in the driveway.

Um...I believe (I could be wrong) that the rotax motor is WET-sump. Aircooled is dry sump with the remote tank.

That said, I add about 4 oz to my CR every five hundred miles or so. I can live with that.I can also tell it's time to add when the oil light (and valve tap) sticks around for more than two seconds on startup.

And there IS a cold check procedure, at least in my manual.

The reason for the complicated oil check is because the motor IS dry sump.
