Hi all, On Monday I noticed an electrical and plastic type burning smell when going through traffic. The bike had only gone about 1-2 miles in under 10 minutes and I smelled it every time I sat at a light or just started moving. After the third time I smelled it the bike just died while at idle in neutral. It started right back up luckily. When I got home I removed the seat and noticed the smell coming from the area with the wiring right under the seat. Any ideas what it could be? |

Did you take anything apart yet? Seems like that would be a good idea... |

See if you can figure out what was burning. It may be charred or melted looking. |

I'll look again but I didn't really notice anything obvious. After I restarted I didn't notice any smell for the next 4-5 miles until I got home. I checked the voltage the entire way home and it was fine at about 13.9-14.2V. |

Check your exhaust/muffler. Sometimes melty stuff gets on there and it smells a lot like wiring meltdown. (but check the wiring too, cuz you never know..) |

Look for nicks in the wire harness going to the ECM. |

Maybe the heat shield or your boot. |

Do you have a factory fairing? |

It's very possible, that on a very hot day, with slow stop-n-go the vinyl in the wiring could outgas enough to smell and show no visible effect. Still, if it smells burnt, look for crispies. Good luck on this one. Z |

I didn't see anything burnt but I rode it today and no smells so that's good. |
