So, on my way home, i stopped at the gas station 4 blocks from my house. I filled it up pretty good (to the top) and ride home. Hour and a half later I smell gas. Lo an behold, theres a small puddle of gas around my rear wheel. I take her out for a spin, and I come back and theres still gas dripping off the rear break...

what gives?

its a CA model.

You already know the answer. You filled it too far. Your canister filled with gas and will take a while to run/evap out.

I had the canister installed on my 49-state '09R to get rid of that puddle and extreme gas smell in my garage. I had no idea you could fill a bike so much that it fills that CA-spec canister with fuel?!

Yes to Rpm4x4's over filling assessment. I overfilled Sunday just before a big ride, the same thing happened to me. Darn that OCD! Five minutes later parked and dripping out of the bungee cord opening on the left side onto the belt guard and then the ground. First and last time I hope. I took the seat off (easy with American Sport Bike quick release pins) and let the area breathe. After that I started it up and let it run down for several minutes. Could this have hurt any of the electricals?

Fuel pumps on most vehicles have wiring running all over in the tank. The wiring in fuel tanks always look nice. There isnt a computer in that area so Danny, I wouldnt worry about it.

Danny, I get nothing for plugging the American Sport Bike quick release pins, but will add AMEN! It's so easy, I sometimes take my seat off just for the hell of it.

I know you don't ... One of the good things about a community is that people can share experiences, good and bad. I guess since I do consulting, it's just second nature for me to point out if I'm on the payroll in any form. Now if politicians could just do that ; )

As a general rule, never fill a bike's tank to the top then park it; especially if you park it in the sun. Even if you didn't over fill it, once the fuel warms up, it will overflow...either via the overflow hose (canister in some cases) or on older models out the top of the fuel cap and down the tank. For those with painted tanks, it usually does some nasty streaking. Cheers, Al
