Considering how many problems peeps have been having with there R's I was feeling pretty lucky as up until now ive had no significant problems. Until yesterday that is I have about 2500 miles on the R now and yesterday noticed the ecu light had come on. Checked the codes and it was crnk pos sys error. This seemed to clear and the ecu light didnt stay on and there seemed to be no problems with the engine running. Went for another ride today to the local bike cafe - no problems on the way there but when i went to start the bike to come home noticed that the ecu light stayed on a lot longer than it normally does when first turning the ignition on and when it did go out the bike wouldnt start! Turned it off and tried again still wouldnt start. Turned it off and tried again this time i got an almighty loud backfire out the exhaust. Turned off and tried again and it started as though there was nothing wrong. Rode 30 miles home with no problems. Any ideas? Cheers Stu |

The manual says: Check Engine Lamp The amber check engine lamp (2) indicates whether the engine management system is operating normally. When an engine malfunction is detected, a check engine message is displayed on the LCD screen. The check engine lamp illuminates briefly when the motorcycle's ignition is first turned on. At this time, the engine management system runs a series of self diagnostics. If the lamp remains continuously lit after the initial diagnostics, begins flashing, or turns on at a later time, see a Buell dealer. This indicates an event has occurred related to the proper operation of the engine management system. It was probably on longer to tell you there's a historic code in there (the Crank Position Sensor one). It also sounds like it was flooded, next time try the flood/fouled plug clearing procedure (Bike in Neutral, Ignition off, Run switch ON, Open throttle to WOT, turn ignition ON). You may still get the backfire but it should then fire up and run fine (if not, repeat and see if that helps) |

The CPS error can be related to a malfunction of the balancing gears. A member here reported in detail with copious pictures about the malfunction related to some improperly machined gears. If it were me I'd be dropping the bike at the dealer and having them fix it. |

I have had a similar problem it ended up the battery was not fully charged. I know I to thought what, I keep it on the tender and it has not happened in over 4200 miles. For what its worth. Scott |
