i literally lit a cigarette off of my rear rotor tonight. took my thermo couple to it after the glowing was gone and when i dismounted it was glowing nearly white hot in the vertical center of the swept area. once i got the thermo couple touching it i read temps right at 500f |

Sounds like you may want to adjust those pads or have that caliper checked out. |

Make sure you aren't resting your foot on it! |

Ditto what Jdug said...it can happen. Then again....if you are ready to stop and have a smoke maybe resting on the foot brake is a good thing |

Foots not resting. Adjust pads? On the foots from the word here I have been riding with the balls of my feet on the pegs which requires me to move to make brake/shifter contact. I also adjusted the brake lever downward a bit just to avoid unintended activation. At this point I do believe the rear brake system is beyound adjustment. This is the worst its been but not the first time its been draggin. When I take it in do you guys think I should push for wheel bearings? I'm not kidding when I said white hot. |

Well I know now that my rear wheel bearings are shot. I can grab the tire and get about 1/2" of movement along with the initial clunking sound that tipped me off. But the rear brake is not binding or getting hot. Now you might have some sort of problem with the master or slave cylinder that is keeping the pads in contact all the time. Might not be bearings. Also the pads are held in place with little clips...sounds odd, but it might be that the clip was in the wrong location or shifted or something to press the pad into the disk. I can see daylight between pad and disk on mine and it only gets hot when I use it. (Message edited by mountainstorm on September 04, 2010) |

I would also push for wheel bearings,if the rotor got that hot i would think there would be significant heat transfer to the bearings on that side to mess with the seals. |

okay o the picked up the R this morning ha it on the lift this afternoon. yup it got hot nope they dunno why by the way there is no fluid in the system at all... I said well that's no real surprise being as though the rotor was white hot!! so new master, caliper, line, rotor and maybe bearings are on the way. i asked about the bearings and he said they'd inspect them very closely for anything wrong and will order new if they find any defects. |

Before coming to a complete stop you want to ride for a 1/2 mile or more to cool it. THis way your pads don't leave deposits on the rotor where they stop. |

cool deal i planned on doing the bed in on the way home i havent used the rear since i picked up friday and dont normally use it often. the replacement feels better than the OE one did new so i guess i got one bad outta the box. it happens glad they fixed it cuz im heading to Va in a few weeks and would have hated to have had that issue while away from home. |
